Carson’s softball team rolled 10-3 against Cox Mill on Wednesday and moved into first place in the SPC with a 6-1 record.

Winning pitcher Lacee Hunsucker had a homer and two singles. Brie Bauer had a triple and two singles. Meghan Kepley had three hits and two RBIs.

Madison Barnhardt homered.

Micah Furr had two hits and two RBIs. Sarah Freeze had two hits. Krista Peninger drove in a run.

Hunsucker struck out nine Chargers.

Carson plays a makeup game at Northwest Cabarrus at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

• South Rowan won 3-2 against East Rowan in SPC play. Freshman Mataya Reynolds homered to break a 2-all tie.

•  Davie  won 4-1 vs. Mt.  Tabor

Julie Gough pitched a three-hitter with no walks and fanned eight.

Prep baseball

Carson won 4-2 in SPC action against Cox Mill on  Wednesday.

Freshman Owen White (3-0) pitched a complete game for the Cougars. White didn’t allow an earned run, struck out seven and walked two.

Carson took an early 2-0 lead on White’s RBI single and a passed ball, but the Chargers tied the game 2-all in the sixth.

Grayson Whicker’s pinch-hit single started the winning rally in the Carson sixth. Heath Mitchem walked  with the bases full to force in the tiebreaking run, and Matt Saul knocked in an insurance run.

Saul had three hits. White had two hits. Michael Morrison, Ryan Bearden and Whicker had a hit apiece.

“We needed this one,” Carson coach Chris Cauble said. “We’ve dug a hole, and now we have a very small margin for error.”

Carson (5-4, 3-4) is scheduled to make up an SPC game Thursday at Northwest Cabarrus.

• Noah Gonzalez pitched a two-hitter as North Rowan beat Lexington 10-0 in CCC action on Wednesday.

Corbin Smith had two hits and four RBIs. Javin Goodine had two hits and two RBIs.

• Salisbury dropped a 5-0 CCC decision at East Davidson.

East Davidson pitcher Ryan McIntire kept the Hornets off-balance and held them to five hits. Ryan Jones had two.

McIntyre also hit a two-run homer.

Harrison Smith (3-1) pitched  five innings for the Hornets. He allowed three hits and one earned run. Zack Bates pitched the sixth.

• West Davidson won 7-4 against Uwharrie Charter  in a non-conference game on Wednesday.

Holden Lanier hit a three-run, walk-off homer for the Green Dragons.

Prep golf

Salisbury shot 161 and won a CCC golf match at Sapona on Wednesday.

Simon Post’s 38 led the Hornets. Other scorers were Christopher Queen (39), Alex Antosek (42) and Abraham Post (42).

East Davidson shot 165. Scott Swaim led the Golden Eagles with a 39.

Lexington shot 231, while North Rowan shot 239. Brodi Madison shot 57 to lead North Rowan. Will Lancaster shot 44 for Lexington.

• Davis Richards shot 31 and led South Rowan (148) to  a win in the SPC match at Crescent on Wednesday.

Other scorers for South Rowan were Andrew Hubbard (36),  Parker Chavis (39) and Dalton Little (42).

East Rowan shot 154. Scoring was led by Nick Lyerly (36), Logan Shuping (38), Bryson Sprinkle (38). Will Garland and Jacob Durham shot 42.

Concord shot 156, led by Walker Cress’ 34 and Stephen Carroll’s 37.

Hickory Ridge’s Brody Davis shot 36.

West Rowan shot 161. Scorers were Denny Triche (39), Cameron Hassard (39), Coyte Kyles (40) and Tim Steele (43).

Carson shot 174. Bobby Bauer, Tristen McDaniel  and Joseph Mitchem shot 43s.  Patrick Street and Logan Overcash shot 45s.

Prep football

A.L. Brown and Mooresville have entered into a two-year contract for football.

In each of those two years, the game will be Military Appreciation night.

Prep soccer

Salisbury’s soccer team won 6-0 against CCC opponent Lexington on Wednesday at Ludwig Stadium.

Adna Music scored the first goal for Salisbury (5-1, 2-0 CCC). Also scoring were  Julia Honeycutt, Ceci Cardelle, Shelby Holden, Juliana Andersonand Gracie Nunez.

It was the first career goal for Nunez, a junior defender.

Assists were by Katie Bullock (two), Bethanie Stauffer, Emily Capito and Anderson.

Anderson and freshman Emily Mann combined for the shutout in goal.

Salisbury got outstanding play from Honeycutt, Bullock and Nellie Brown.

Salisbury hosts North Stanly on Thursday at 6.

• Annie Habeeb scored two goals as Gray Stone tied Union Academy 3-3 on Wednesday.

Prep tennis

Carson won 9-0 against  South Rowan in SPC tennis on Wednesday.

Marshall Wood, Graham Purcell, Jordan Stoyanov, Chris Martin, Dante Syahavong and Lucas Sides won in singles.

Wood-Purcell, Stoyanov-Martin and Syahavong-Hunter Smith were  the winning doubles teams for the Cougars (2-4, 1-2).

Women’s hoops

Limestone’s women’s basketball team had its 33-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday.

The Saints lost to  the Cal Baptist Lancers  85-67  in a D-II national semifinal.

College golf

Livingstone’s golf team finished in second place, one stroke behind Chowan, in the CIAA Northern  Tournament.

Phillip Harrison led the Blue Bears, shooting 77-79 — 156  and finishing third individually. Stephen Washington tied for sixth at 161.

  

College tennis

Catawba lost 6-3 at Lincoln Memorial in men’s and women’s SAC tennis matches on Wednesday.

Catawba’s women are 8-10 overall but 0-7 in the SAC. Catawba’s men are 11-8 and 2-5 in the SAC.

College lacrosse

Catawba suffered an 11-10 loss in overtime to host Queens in men’s lacrosse   on Wednesday night.

Zach LaFavre scored three goals for Catawba (3-7, 1-5 SAC).

College baseball

Catawba scored six times in the 10th inning to win 7-1 against Winston-Salem State at BB&T Ballpark on Wednesday.

The 17th-ranked Indians are 24-5.

The Rams, ranked 26th in D-II, fell to 19-7.

It was tied 1-all after nine innings, but Catawba exploded in the 10th.

Blake Houston walked, and  Kyle Smith and Will Albertson  followed with singles to load the bases with no outs.

After a forceout at home, Craig Brooks  laced a two-run single to give Catawba a 3-1 lead.

The Indians added another run when Grayland Fowler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Pinch-hitter Chance Bowden then singled home two runs and Luke Setzer got the final run home on a groundout.

Brooks (6-1) got the win in relief. He threw four scoreless innings and fanned 10 of the 12 men he faced. The senior gave up one hit.

Brooks had two hits  along with Smith, Austin Stilley  and Dylan Richardson.

Sean Grant  started for the Indians and pitched into the sixth.

Catawba is scheduled to return to league action on Friday at 6 pm, opening a three-game SAC series at Coker.

• Noah Holmes (East Rowan) had two hits for Appalachian State in an 11-8 loss to Wake Forest on Wednesday in Boone.

College softball

Catawba set a school record for homers in a game and split a SAC doubleheader with Newberry on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field.

Catawba (12-12, 1-5 SAC)  won 8-0 and lost 5-2.

All five Catawba hits in the opener were home runs, accounting for all eight runs.  The five longballs bettered the previous mark of four which had happened three times.

  Kim Fesperman (South Rowan) hit a grand slam.

Natalie Naturile homered twice. Caroline Turner and   Katherine Shumaker also homered.

Carley Tysinger  threw her fourth shutout of the season and second straight.

She scattered three hits, walked two and struck out nine.

Newberry rallied to win the nightcap with four runs in the sixth.

Gina Gerone hit a two-run homer for the Indians in the nightcap.

Tysinger took the loss in relief to fall to 8-6.  She fanned eight in 4 2/3 innings.

Catawba will host Tusculum in a SAC doubleheader on Saturday,  starting at 1 p.m.

     

Mid. school golf

Salisbury Academy shot 170 and defeated Sacred Heart (188) on Wednesday at Warrior.

The Jaguars were led by medalist Hank Robins with a career-best 36. Mitch Jeter shot 44.   Charlie Barr and Walker Hartpence shot 45s for the Jaguars (6-1).

Mid. school baseball

Southeast won 14-0 against Knox on Wednesday.

Cole Hales had three hits for the Patriots.  Daniel Durham, Luke Barringer and Garrett Alewine had two hits apiece.

Barringer hit a home run. Hales pitched a three-hitter  with five strikeouts.

Hales pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts.

Southeast (3-0) is at Erwin on April 7.

• West Rowan Middle won 9-8 against Corriher-Lipe on Wednesday.

Payne Stolsworth, Carsen Bailey and Jake Perez paced the Bulldogs at the plate.

Bailey picked up the win.

West Rowan (2-0) is off until after spring break.

Mid. school tennis

Knox lost 5-4 to Southeast on Wednesday.

Singles winners for Knox were Roarke Burton, Luke Grenoble, and Jander Rodas.

Winning in doubles for Knox was the team of Burton-Grenoble.  Knox will travel to China Grove on Thursday.
