N.C. Zoo open after snow closure
ASHEBORO (AP) — One of North Carolina’s top tourist attractions is reopening after being closed for a week by winter’s snow and ice.
The North Carolina Zoo is scheduled to reopen Tuesday. It’s been closed for seven days as zoo officials waited for ice to melt on five miles of pathways and bridges.
Zoo spokesman Gavin Johnson says the cold weather has meant different treatment for different animals. Johnson says African beasts like elephants are brought indoors when winter temperatures drop below 45 degrees. Other critters like cougar and polar bears were outside in their exhibit.
The zoo’s winter operating hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
