Athlete of the Week: South Rowan’s Avery Locklear

South Rowan senior basketball player Avery Locklear is the Post’s Athlete of the Week for both her recent and career accomplishments.

Playing in the Sam Moir Christmas Classic at Catawba, Locklear broke South Rowan’s career scoring record.

Jill Cress’ record of 1,529 points had stood since 1997. Locklear now has 1,539.

Locklear scored 79 points in the tournament and led the Raiders to a 2-1 record in the event. Locklear scored 28 in a loss to North Rowan, 21 in a win against West Rowan and 30 in a win against Carson. Locklear pulled down 34 rebounds in South Rowan’s three games and posted three straight double-doubles.

Locklear shot 29-for-58 from the floor (50 percent), made three 3-pointers and shot 18-for-23 (78 percent) on free throws. She was named to the all-tournament team.

Locklear leads Rowan County in scoring with 19.9 points per game and has signed with UNC Pembroke.
