This scene is part of the historical photographs included in the 1981 book ‘Salisbury Renaissance,’ compiled by Historic Salisbury Foundation and the Rowan Art Guild Gallery. It shows first graders at the North Ellis Street Graded School planting a garden in the rear of an addition to the school. The addition was built in 1904 to provide for a library, auditorium, offices and classrooms. It was later torn down, but those North Ellis Street homes in the background still remain. It’s interesting that students and teachers at several elementary schools in Rowan County have begun planting gardens again.
