Area Sports Briefs: Livingstone loses close one; West Rowan girls win

Livingstone’s men’s basketball team lost 86-85 to Florida Tech on Friday night in a game played in Orangeburg, S.C.
Jermaine Jackson scored 23 points for Florida Tech, including the game-winning bucket.
Hakeem Jackson and Eric Dubose scored 23 each for the Blue Bears (6-3), including a go-ahead jumper for an 85-84 lead late.
Ty Newman added 11 for Livingstone. The Blue Bears trailed 55-49 at halftime.
• Catawba’s men’s team plays at J.C. Smith on Saturday at 4 p.m.
West girls win
Taylor Martin scored 14 points and Khaila Hall had 13 as West Rowan’s girls (4-6, 3-3) won 47-39 at Concord in SPC action on Friday.
• West Rowan’s boys (5-5, 4-2) lost to the Spiders 92-76.
8th-grade hoops
Janiya Downs scored 14 points as Corriher-Lipe beat West Rowan Middle’s girls 31-23.
Ashlyn Plott scored 10 points, and Rhiannon Kimmer added five for the Yellow Jackets.
Chantal Robinson and Kia Pharr scored eight each for the Bulldogs. Hannah Pratt had seven.
• North Rowan Middle’s boys (10-0) defeated Erwin 59-21. Brevin Goodlett led the Mavericks with 25 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Cameron Gill followed with 12 points. Quintous Smith had seven points and seven rebounds.
Gabe Hinceman led Erwin with 10 points.
Local golf
Sixty-five GARS members played in foursomes at Warrior earlier this week.
Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 66.06 was Mick Rowell. Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 66.64 was Steve Alabanese. Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 63.02 was Bob Stepanian. Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 65.83 was Roger Costic.

Tigers fall
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina has beaten two major conference teams in a row by at least 23 points. That the latest win was over bitter rival Clemson.
Duane Notice scored 19 points as South Carolina (6-3) clamped down on the Tigers in a 68-45 win Friday night.
The Gamecocks had 13 days off for exams since the last time out, a 75-49 victory over Oklahoma State.
