HUNTERSVILLE — North Rowan’s boys basketball team returned from Huntersville on Wednesday  with a 64-59 victory over Lake Norman Charter.

The Cavaliers (4-1) trailed by four points at the start of the fourth quarter. They scored 23 points in the final eight minutes to triumph.

For the Cavaliers, Jalen Sanders scored a game-high 23 points. Josh Handy was right there with Sanders with a 21-point effort. Joseph Scott added 11.

North Rowan (64): Sanders 23, Handy 21,  Scott 11, Lentz 5, Hillie 2, Shields 2, Mungin,  Jefferies.

North Rowan girls

HUNTERSVILLE — North Rowan’s girls took control from the outset and got a resounding 66-22 win Wednesday at Lake Norman Charter.

North Rowan (3-2) was ahead 27-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Special Washington led the Cavaliers  with 20 points. Demeria Robinson scored 14 points for the victorious Cavaliers.

North Rowan (66): Washington 20, Robinson 14,  Blaire 9, Alexander 8, Pruitt 6, White 4, Mills 4, Russell 1, Cannon, Morrison.

Prep basketball

SPC frontrunner Hickory Ridge won 74-71 against Cabarrus rival Jay M. Robinson on Wednesday.

For Hickory Ridge, Jaylen Stowe scored 23 points.

Robinson’s Levar Batts Jr. scored 28 points.

•  Robinson’s girls won 67-46 against  Hickory Ridge   on Wednesday.

Kelsi Mahoney and Isabel Bernal had 14 points each for the Bulldogs.

Laura  McManimen and Gabby Smith scored eight apiece for the Ragin’ Bulls.

Jayvee boys

Carson’s jayvee boys stayed unbeaten with a 47-35  win at A.L. Brown on Wednesday.

Jailen Williams led the Cougars with 19 points.

Owen White scored nine.

College tennis

Catawba coach Jeff Childress announced the signing of Emily Corcoran of Milton, Ga.

Corcoran, a product of St. Francis High, was a four-year starter  at the number No. 1 position, including two years as team captain.  Corcoran ranked as high as 35th in Georgia.

Salisbury Academy

The Salisbury Academy jayvee boys lost 19-18 to North Hills.

Graham Smith scored nine for the Jaguars. Will Fowler had eight.

• The Salisbury Academy jayvee girls won 18-9 against Statesville Christian.

Emma Nianouris scored eight points to lead the Jaguars.

• The Salisbury Academy varsity girls won 29-25 against Statesville Christian.

Annabel Barr scored 10 points and made clutch free throws at the end.   Katie Leckonby scored seven points.

 

North Hills hoops

The North Hills jayvee boys won 57-43 against Quality Education.

Dean Gilmore scored 23 for the Eagles. James Houghton had 13, Will Johnson scored nine, and Collin Lewis added five.

 

Jayvee basketball

East Rowan’s boys lost 63-59 in overtime to Hickory Ridge on Tuesday.

Ellis Taylor scored 18 points for the Mustangs.

Lucas Morton had 12 points, Paiton File had eight  points and 10 rebounds, and Bryson Sprinkle had nine points.

Memorial tournament

The Catawba women’s basketball team will host  a memorial basketball game in honor of Stephanie Valentine on Saturday, Dec.  20, at 2 p.m.  at  Goodman Gym.

The game will match Catawba’s women’s basketball alumni against the current players.

Valentine was a 2005 Catawba graduate.  She was a First Family Scholarship recipient and a  captain of the women’s basketball team.

In September, she lost a courageous battle with adrenal cortical cancer.

College football

Duke linebacker David Helton was named the 25th recipient of the William V. Campbell Trophy.

The award is given for a combination of schoolwork, play and community service.

Gray Stone’s Meghan Hedgepeth was the YVC West Player of the Year for girls tennis.

• Gray Stone’s  Sheri Efird was YVC West Coach of the Year for volleyball.

• Gray Stone’s David Cowan was the YVC West Runner of the Year for boys cross country.

• Gray Stone’s Annie Habeeb was the YVC West Runner of the Year for girls cross country. Coach of the Year was Gray Stone’s Mike Furr.

• Gray Stone’s Sandi Jusic was the YVC West Player of the Year for boys soccer.

NCHSAA

Mallard Creek quarterback James Smith  and South Brunwsick swimmer McKenzie White were named winners of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards.

Smith accounted for over 400 yards total offense as Mallard Creek held off Lake Norman 48-41 in the 4AA Western regional football championship game to advance to the state final. Smith threw for 280 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 129 yards and a score.

 

Davidson wins

MISSOULA, Mont.  — Jack Gibbs scored 28 points, dished out eight assists and went 12 of 12 from the free throw line to lead Davidson to a 110-99 win over Montana on Wednesday night.

In a close contest that featured hot shooting from both teams, Davidson (7-1) held off Montana (3-5) at the free throw line, going 34 for 36 overall and a perfect 8 for 8 over the final 1:16 to finally put the score out of reach.

Brian Sullivan contributed 22 points, Tyler Kalinoski added 21, Jordan Barham had 16 and Peyton Aldridge 14 for Davidson, which shot 58.9 percent from the floor.

Montana, which shot 55.9 percent, pulled to within three on a Jordan Gregory 3-pointer that made it 99-96 with 2:01 to go but couldn’t overtake Davidson down the stretch.

Martin Breunig led the Grizzles with 30 points and six rebounds, while Gregory finished with 29 points.

UNCG wins

GREENSBORO — Tevon Saddler scored 24 points and Nicholas Paulos added 19 to help UNC Greensboro beat crosstown foe Greensboro College 82-78 on Wednesday.

Greensboro College’s Raheem Martin hit the first of two free throws to knot the game at 75. UNCG’s Paulos converted a three-point play and later Diante Baldwin hit two free throws for an 80-75 lead. Greensboro got within 80-78 after three free throws with 21 second left, but Saddler sealed it with two makes from the line. Baldwin and Jordy Kuiper had 11 apiece for UNC Greensboro (3-6).
