East Spencer to postpone weekend events

EAST SPENCER — Town officials say a number of events previously scheduled for the weekend had to be postponed and will now take place next weekend.

The Saturday rain deterred the hundreds of motorcyclists who were expected at a fundraiser ride for Randi Conard, the wife East Spencer Police Officer David Conard. The ride did take place with the few who attended, but organizers say they’d like the opportunity for a bigger crowd.

The ride will now take place Saturday, Nov. 15 leaving from Tilley Harley-Davidson, 653 Bendix Drive, Salisbury, at 11 a.m. and will end at the East Spencer Police Department. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and is $20 a bike and $5 for a passenger.

Randi was paralyzed after she was hit by a car coming home on N.C. 150. A car hit the back of Conard’s car, causing the car to spin, cross the center lane and hit a utility pole.

The impact of the crash shattered Randi’s vertebrae, injuring her spinal cord and causing permanent paralysis. She doesn’t remember very much of the Aug. 20 crash.

The funds raised will assist the family with the cost of building wheelchair ramps, widening doors and other medical needs.

The East Spencer Trunk or Treat event was also postponed until Nov. 15 and will take place at 11:30 a.m. at town hall. The 1,000 Men Marching event will also take place Nov. 15 and will begin at 9 a.m. inside the fellowship hall of New Hope AME Zion Church, 1470 North Long St.

Speakers of the march include community organizer Kenneth Foxx Mohammed, Associate Minister Anthony Smith of New Zion Baptist Church Dunns Mountain; East Spencer Mayor Barbara Mallett and community activist Alex Clark. The march will end a few miles away at the Paul L. Dunbar Center, 820 North Long St. The event is sponsored by Fishers of Men Outreach, The Chamber (not the Rowan County Chamber) Night Crawlers and Rowan Concerned Citizens.
