Catawba men’s basketball coach Rob Perron announced recruits.
Joining the program will be Carlin Bremner (Davidson), Rakeen Brown (Hampton, Va.), Greg Childress (Concord), Jeremy McLaughlin (Greenville, S.C.), Jerrin Morrison (Charlotte), Ben Sealey (Hampton, Va.) and Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C.). Bremner, Brown and Sealey are transfers.
“I’m very happy with our first recruiting class,” Perron said. “It was more of a sprint versus a marathon, with my arrival coming about five weeks after the signing date. We signed two student-athletes from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, and all have a chance to contribute right away.
Bremner is a 6-foot guard from North Meck. He has played at Central Arkansas and Winthrop and will redshirt this season.
Brown joins Catawba from Delaware State. Sealey started 24 games for Virginia Intermont last year, averaging 6.8 points and handing out a team-high 74 assists.
Childress is a 5-foot-9 guard from Concord. Between Concord and Albemarle, he scored 1,197 career points and helped his teams win three conference titles. He was a two-time all-conference selection at Albemarle.
McLaughlin is a a 6-7 center. Morrison is a 6-3 forward, who scored 1,500 points at East Meck.
Taylor, a 6-3 guard, was All-State and a a region player of the year.
• Catawba’s women’s soccer team (6-0, 2-0) stayed undefeated Saturday with a 2-1 win at Carson-Newman. Karen Presnell (Salisbury) and Mary Kirkman scored the goals for the 12th-ranked Indians.
• Catawba’s men’s soccer team lost 3-0 at Carson-Newman on Saturday.
The Indians received three yellow cards while the Eagles tallied four yellows and a red.
• Catawba’s volleyball team lost 25-21, 25-13, 25-11 to Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym.
Rachel Gallup had six kills and four blocks for Catawba (2-6, 0-3 SAC).
• Lincoln Memorial beat Catawba’s volleyball team 27-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16 on Friday. Senior Ashley Brown had nine blocks and six kills to lead Catawba
• Catawba’s men’s and women’s tennis teams won against Johnson C. Smith on Saturday. Catawba’s men rolled 9-0, while the women won 8-1. Both Catawba teams are 1-1.
• Catawba cross country teams competed in the Winthrop Invitational on Saturday,
The Catawba men finished third with 100 points while the women did not field enough runners to qualify for team points.
Matthew Jordan-Steele was the fastest Catawba finisher in the men’s 8K event/ He was ninth in 27:48.
Freshman Jennifer Lomax ran to a third-place finish for the Catawba women with a time of 20:36.

Salisbury’s Frank Adams III took first place with an 11-under-par 65-68 — 133 at Cowans Ford Golf Club in Stanley last week. His one-stroke victory in the GPro Tour event was worth $2,700.
• The 8th annual American Legion Golf Tournament was held in memory of Gene Auten at Corbin Hills on Friday.
Last names were not submitted for some flight winners.
The First Flight winners were David Goodman, Greg Gardner, Shirley and Brandon. They shot 53 and won in a scorecard playoff with Beth Calhoun, Phyllis Durland, Kristi Laton and Keith Dorsett.
Second Flight Winners with a 60 were Henry Morgan, Ronnie, Lee and David.
Third Flight winners with a 66 were Brian Smith, Jason Miles, DeWayne Gillespie and Jeff Howard.
Closest to the pin winners were David Roueche (No. 2), Wayne Bostian (No. 5), Laton (No. 13) and Morgan (No. 16). Pete Kuld won longest putt on No. 9.

The Salisbury Parks and Recreation will host a local NFL Punt Pass & Kick competition on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. at Catawba’s Shuford Stadium. PP&K is for boys and girls ages 6-15. The event is free. Soft sole tennis shoes only, no cleats. Register online at www.nflppk.com or at the event.
The Salisbury Rotary Fall Tennis Classic will start Friday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. and runs through Oct. 12. The weekend tournament features singles and doubles competition for Juniors (18 and under) and adults as well as mixed doubles. Entry fees are $15 for Juniors (first event) or $5 (second event) and $25 for adults (first event) or $10 (second event). The entry deadline is Monday, Octo. 6.

Salisbury Academy’s varsity soccer team beat North Hills 9-0. Mitch Jeter scored four goals, Hank Robins had two, and Jeremiah Whitaker, Sam Combs and Archie Dees.
• Salisbury Academy soccer won 5-1 against North Hills. Sadie Miller, Wade Robins and Christopher Portillo accounted for the goals.
Justin Allion (West Rowan) started ninth and finished seventh at the ARCA ZLOOP 150 at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday.
Erwin’s girls won for the fourth tiem by beating China Grove.
Winners in singles for the Eagles were Lauren Weisensel, Kristen Brady, Jordan Loflin and Riane Richardson. Winners in doubles were Victoria Plyler, Sage Fann, Loflin, Richardson, Weisensel and Brady.
West Rowan Middle rolled 36-0 against Corriher-Lipe in seventh-grade football.
Tykese Warren scored touchdowns on runs of 3 and 12 yards and threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Houston.
Houston scored on a 23 yard-run, had an interception and accounted for 160 yards of offense.
Jay Joseph added a 33-yard touchdown run, while Jaxon Wheeler added three 2-point conversions.
The offensive line of Carter Jenkins, Baiden Suddarth, Edwin Berrios, Johnny Hassard, Drake Martin, Bryson Coleman and JT Bost blocked well.
The defense was led by Zeb Burns, who had a fumble recovery and an interception. Ethan Pratt, Nicholi Warren, Daniel Sell, Houston and Joseph were defensive leaders.
West Rowan coach Erich Epps is dedicating the season to longtime friend and legendary YFL coach Mike McCullough, who passed away Monday.
“Coach McCullough has been the foundation of West Rowan football for many years and will be greatly missed in many ways,” he said.
West Rowan (2-0) plays at Knox on Tuesday.
Catawba Valley Community College (14-5, 6-0) swept Guilford Tech, Aimee Cloninger (Carson) had 11 kills and 15 digs.
Tiffany Brooks (South Rowan) had 10 kills.
