Hornets take tennis opener

Defending state champion Salisbury opened its tennis campaign with a 6-0 victory over Hibriten. The two teams did not play doubles due to the weather.
Winners for the Hornets were Kayla Honeycutt (6-2, 6-1), Kathryn Rusher (6-1, 6-1), Grace Steinman (6-1, 6-0), Maria Capito (6-0, 6-1), Emily Capito (6-0, 6-0) and Julia Honeycutt (6-0, 6-0).
The Hornets are home against East Rowan on Wednesday as well as Thursday versus Ledford.
Both matches start at 4 p.m.
• Carson opened with a 6-0 win against North Rowan on Monday.
North Rowan’s varsity volleyball team lost 18-25, 24-26 and 21-25 to Statesville on Monday to open the season.
Coach Sandy Lytton said the Cavaliers played well against a strong team.
Makala Lytton had five aces and 10 kills for the Cavaliers. Demeria Robinson had 25 service returns and 14 digs. Chevy Blaire had four aces, while Aliyah Farmer had five kills. New setter Ashlyn Mills had a promising debut.

Catawba was picked ninth in the South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Coaches Poll. The poll and the preseason All-SAC teams were announced by the league office on Monday.
Wingate, eight-time defending champs, was picked to win the crown. The Bulldogs have won the last two Southeast Regional Championships and are coming off a 32-3 season with a perfect 22-0 SAC mark.
The SAC volleyball season gets under way Friday, Sept. 5. Catawba opens play that day at the Queens Fall Invitational with its first opponent being Sioux Falls, S.D., at 10:30 a.m.

Kannapolis Intimidators starting pitcher Andre Wheeler, 22, was named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for Aug. 11-17. Wheeler went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, tossing 10 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts while limiting opposing batters to three hits and four walks.
