SALISBURY — Larry Leckonby was named Catawba’s new athletic director Tuesday morning.
Leckonby has been athletic director at The Citadel since 2008 and was previously Executive Senior Associate Director of Athletics and CFO at Maryland from for six years.
“All of the people I’ve met during the process and visits here, from coaches to board members to student athletes, have been exceptional,” Leckonby said in a phone interview. “One thing my wife and I set out to do was get out to a level where we can interact with our student athletes on a day-to-day basis.”
Leckonby played lacrosse while receiving his undergraduate degree at Duke and earned his masters degree at UMass. Leckonby has worked in athletics administration at Maryland, Houston, Boston College, Old Dominion and Boston University.
“Larry’s breadth of experience is impressive, but it is his passion for athletes as students that made him such a desirable candidate for us,” Catawba President Brien Lewis said in an email.
Leckonby takes over for interim AD Jeff Childress, who stepped in after Dennis Davidson resigned in November.
“I’m looking forward to moving in and being a visible part of the Catawba campus,” Leckonby said.
Leckonby’s first day at Catawba will be June 23.
