South’s Richards shoots 73 on Day 1

South Rowan shot 328 on the first day of the 3A State Championships at FoxFire Golf and Country Club.
The Raiders are 11th in the team standings, although they’re close enough to move up quite a few spots when the tournament concludes today.
Davis Richards shot 73 to lead South. He’s tied for fifth in the individual standings.
Other South scorers were Evan Neas (80), Josh Pope (85) and Hunter Chapman (90).
The top four scores counted. Brennan Lambert shot 91, while Dalton Little shot 92.
Concord’s Walker Cress shot 73. The individual leader is Weddington’s Alex Simpson. He shot 69.
In the team standings, Gastonia Forestview leads at 301. Burlington Williams is second at 302. Golfers will start at 8 a.m. today.
• In the 4A competition in Sanford, Hough’s Patrick Cover shot 68 for the the individual lead. Raleigh Broughton paced the team scores.
• In the 1A comeptition at Whispering Pines, Kenersville Bishop McGuinness took a big lead in the team competition. Reilly Erhardt of McGuinness shot 71 for the individual lead.
Softball state playoff pairings were announced Monday.
Carson will play at Ledford tonight at 7 p.m.
West Rowan will play at home at 5 p.m. on Wednesday against South Iredell.
Salisbury will play at Lake Norman Charter at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Salisbury will play at home in the first round of the 2A soccer playoffs on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against South Stokes.
Carson is at home against Kings Mountain in 3A, while West Rowan travels to Hickory.

Gabe Steinman made a hole-in-one recently at The Country Club of Salisbury.
Steinman aced the 184-yard No. 9 hole with a 6-iron. He was playing with Salisbury High teammates Eric Edwards and Abraham Post.
• In the latest Thursday Scramble at Rolling Hills, front nine winners were Kevin Thompson, Junior Howard, Harold Morris and Debby Little
Back nine winners were Alex Safrit, Jimmy Coone, Gino Greene and Mike Summerall. Little, Guy McGuire. Frank Goforth and Maui Doc were closest to the pin winners.
• The McCanless Couples played with a Captain’s Choice format on Sunday.
The winning team was Treva Honeycutt, Susan Houston and Tommy Reynolds.
Finishing second was the team of Walt Kincaid, Kim Kincaid and Ritchie Kincaid.
Treva Honeycutt won closest to the pin.
Reynolds won longest putt.
• In a tournament at Crescent, the team of Jared Barnette-Justin Lefler shot 65 to win gross. David Trenor-Brandon Cranfield shot 59 to win net.

The Greater Cabarrus Homeschool Stallions lost 12-6 in eight innings to Raleigh.
McConner Wallace had four hits for the Stallions. Sawyer Strickland, Travis Cone and Noah Jarrett had two apiece.
The Stallions (19-7) play in the state homeschool tournament Saturday in Greensboro.
The 26th annual Piedmont Pitcher/Catcher Camp will be held at Central Davidson on July 9-10 from 8:30 until noon.
The camp is for ages 6-18. The cost is $60. Instructors include Duke coach Chris Pollard.

New Catawba Chiefs Club president Joe Crapster announced former NFL QB Heath Shuler as a special guest speaker for the next meeting on Monday, June 2 at 6 p.m. in the Tom Smith Auditorium.
All Chiefs Club members and those who may be interested in joining are invited to attend the meeting and to bring a friend.
The Chiefs Club had over 500 members last year and the group is hoping to grow its membership to a record 600 in 2014-15.
No. 6 seed Catawba will play at No. 1 seed Lander in the first round of the Southeast Regional on Thursday.
Lander (47-6) is ranked No. 2 nationally and is hosting the double-elimination, six-team tournament in Greenwood, S.C.
SAC champ Catawba is 33-18.
The other first-round games are Mount Olive vs. Georgia College and Columbus State vs. USC Aiken.
The tournament runs through Sunday.
Tickets are $5 per day for adults. Children 12 -under and seniors 55-over can get $3 tickets.
WSAT will broadcast the Catawba games on the radio and stream the games on the Internet.

A cross country interest meeting will be held Wednesday, May 28, at 6 p.m. at West Rowan High for anyone interesting in running next school year.
