Rowan Legion sign-ups set

Rowan County American Legion Baseball is holding sign-ups on Sunday, April 13, at 2 p.m. at the Harold B. Jarrett Post 342 on Lincolnton Road in Salisbury.
Players 19-under are eligible for the Senior team and players 17-under are eligible for the Junior team.
Players need to bring a copy of their birth certificate to the meeting.

Ralph Shatterly was inducted into the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame on March 24.
Shatterly grew up in Yanceyville.
After majoring in history and physical education at Appalachian State, Shatterly initiated the wrestling program at North Rowan while also coaching football and track. He coached at North for 22 years before moving to West Rowan in 1985 in order to coach his sons.
During his career, he coached football offensive backs for 30 years, was head track coach for 15 years, was head wrestling coach for 32 years and served as athletic director at both schools.
His wrestling teams were WNCHSAA champs in 1968 and 1969. His North and West wrestling teams won conference championships in the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
He coached 25 WNCHSAA and NCHSAA individual champions. His track team won the 1968 WNCHSAA championship. He directed the 1983 NCHSAA state track meet at North.
Shatterly has been inducted into the high school division of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Salisbury-Rowan County Sports Hall of Fame and the North Rowan Hall of Fame. He serves as co-chair of the Salisbury-Rowan Hall of Fame committee.
The first ever high school sand volleyball competition in Rowan County was held on Thursday.
The Triangle Homeschoolers took on South Stanly High in a doubleheader and swept 2-0. After being rained out twice, this was South Stanly’s first sand competition, while Triangle is now 6-2.
Emily Messisco and Kimberly Hovey, Triangle’s top- seeded team, is 8-0.
Catawba’s SAC doubleheader at Wingate was postponed. Two seven-inning games will be played today, starting at 1 p.m.
Elliot Gilbert scored in overtime to lift Pfeiffer to a 10-9 win against Catawba in men’s lacrosse on Friday night.
Pete Wesselman made 12 saves for the Indians. Pfeifer is 8-1, while Catawba is 6-5
Devynne Brown scored on an assist by Kelby Porter, as East Rowan tied Central Cabarrus 1-1 in SPC soccer on Friday.

In a meet at West Rowan that included West, South Rowan, East Rowan, Carson and Concord, East’s boys (133), topped West (105), Carson (77), Concord (49) and South (6) and East’s girls (104) won over West (93), Concord (83), Carson (46) and South (35).

The Rowan County Meet is at East Rowan on Tuesday.
The Novant Health Foundation Rowan Medical Center will host the 16th annual John Campbell Memorial Golf Classic on Friday, May 2, at the Country Club of Salisbury.
The tournament will raise funds to purchase an Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump for the hospital’s critical care unit.
Last year’s tournament raised nearly $82,000 for outpatient endoscopy services.
The John Campbell Memorial Golf Classic in held in honor of the late John Campbell, who served as executive director of the medical center’s foundation until his death in 1998.
The tournament’s title sponsor for the 12th year is Cloninger Ford.
Registration and continental breakfast will begin at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The afternoon flight registration and luncheon begins at noon with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Entry fees are $175 per golfer and $700 per team of four. The 25th annual NHSCA National High School Wrestling Championship started Friday and end today in Virginia Beach, Va.
The event featured a record 3,368 entries.
Carson girls basketball will be hosting Monday night middle school clinics starting March 31. Clinics will run 6-8 p.m. at the Carson gym on March 31; April 7, 14, and 28; May 5, 12, and 19; and June 2.

The Academy Sports/East Rowan Diamond Sports 5K and Fun Run will be held at 8 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, at Rockwell Elementary School.

The entry fee is $25 for 5K by April 1, $15 for Fun Run by April 1. Race Day is $30 from 7-8 a.m. late entry does not guarantee a T-shirt or medal for Fun Run.

There are awards for the top three overall male and female and male and female masters and for age-group males and females.

Wingate will hold its annual girls basketball camp on June 22-25. The camp is open to girls ages 8-17. The fee for overnight campers is $395. The fee for day campers is $195.
