Catawba’s baseball team swept Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday in Hickory.
The Indians, who started the season 1-7, are now 9-8 overall and 5-3 in the SAC (fourth place).
In a 6-4 win in Game 1, Blake Houston (South Rowan) went 3-for-3 and scored three runs. Ethan Satterfield and Keaton Hawks had two hits and two RBIs each.
Sean Grant started but was knocked out by L-R’s four-run fifth. Shafer Shepard (3-0) was exceptional in relief from the fifth through the eighth and earned the win. Ryan McClintock notched his fifth save.
Catawba scored two in the ninth to break a 4-all tie. Satterfield drove in Houston with the deciding run, and Hawks knocked in Satterfield for insurance.
In the nightcap, Catawba won 5-1. Craig Brooks (2-2) was oustanding on the mound. He allowed three hits, fanned six and went all the way.
Hawks and Paul Kronenfeld had two hits each. Kronenfeld’s fourth-inning RBI double broke a 1-all tie.
Malachi Hanes had a key pinch-hit in the seventh. His single drove in two runs to give Brooks some breathing room.
• Pfeiffer swept Belmont Abbey on Saturday, taking 1-0 and 8-6 victories.
Pfeiffer (10-7, 2-1 CC) got dominating pitching from Keith Little to win the opener.
• Forrest Buchanan (Salisbury) was the winning pitcher in relief for Belmont Abbey in Friday’s 9-8 win against Pfeiffer.
Catawba’s women’s basketball team lost 71-62 at Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
Chloe Bully scored 14 for the Indians (14-12, 12-10 SAC). Jada Huntley and Janna Dixon scored 10 each.
Bully had seen assists, and Emma Ucinski had five. Huntley had eight rebounds.
Catawba shot 33.8 percent for the game and committed 20 turnovers.
The third-place Railsplitters (16-10, 15-7) shot 37.7 percent and also shot 17 more free throws than the Indians.
Catawba trailed 42-33 at halftime. The Indians fell behind 15 early in the second half but cut the deficit to a single point twice, both times on 3-pointers by Dixon.
Dixon’s second 3 came with 11:30 remaining, but Lincoln Memorial took over from there.
Katrina Ottesen scored 18 for Lincoln Memorial.
Catawba will be the No. 5 seed in the SAC tournament and will play at No. 4 Carson-Newman on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate were co-champions. L-R got the No. 1 seed.

Catawba’s men’s basketball team ended the season with a 110-61 loss at SAC champion Lincoln Memorial on Saturday night.
Tyrece Little had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Indians (7-19, 7-15). Catawba’s lone senior Chris Watson scored eight points in his final game.
LMU star Vincent Bailey had 34 points and 21 rebounds in another dominating performance. LMU (24-2, 20-2) is ranked second in the region and shot 52 percent.
Catawba was 2-for-15 on 3-pointers and shot 30.4 percent. Catawba was down 47-25 at halftime.

Catawba’s lacrosse teams made their SAC debuts on Saturday with great success.
Catawba’s women rolled 18-3 against Brevard. Meredith Jones and Kim McConnery scored three goals each.
Catawba’s men won 17-6 against the Tornados. John Scheich led the Indians with five goals and five assists.
• Elon’s Chelsea White (East Rowan) pitched a three-hitter in Elon’s 2-0 win against Dayton on Saturday.
White (5-3) struck out a career-high eight.
• Belmont Abbey’s Samantha Jacobs (North Rowan) pitched a a three-hitter in the Crusaders’ 8-0 win against Barton on Saturday. Jacobs struck out 10 and walked one. Kaitlyn Jones (South Rowan) had two hits for BA.
• Catawba racked up two more wins in Spartanburg, S.C., on Saturday and is now 11-1.
Carley Tysinger pitched a 5-1 win against sixth-ranked Armstrong. Tysinger (7-0) struck out 12 and walked none. Sydney Hyder had two hits and scored twice.
Freshman Caroline Turner (3-1) shut out Alderson-Broaddus 2-0 with a two-hitter. Natalie Naturile had two hits for the Indians.
Catawba opened play at the Mid-South Classic in Spartanburg on Friday with a 4-0 shutout of GRU Augusta.
Tysinger pitched the shutout. She allowed three hits and struck out 13.
Davie’s Ross Hoffner and Elijah Jones have signed with the Surry County Community College Knights.
Hoffner plays second base and catcher for the Mocksville Legion team as well as Davie High, while Jones plays first base and pitches for Davie.
• East Davidson won 5-4 in extra innings against Trinity on Friday. Tyler Rhodes was the winning pitcher and also knocked in the winning run in the eighth.
Carson’s softball team won 6-1 against East Rowan on Friday. Lacee Hunsucker struck out 10. Michaela White had two hits for the Cougars.
Hunsucker, Morgan Penninger, Jana Bradshaw, Mariah Mogan, Adison Collins and Rachel Freeze had a hit apiece for Carson.
• Hunter Gibbons belted two home runs to lead West Rowan to a 10-3 SPC win against Northwest Cabarrus on Friday. Marissa Yow had two hits for the Falcons. Taylor Martin had a key hit.
Leah McCoy held Northwest to five hits.
• Central Cabarrus won 10-0 against Gray Stone in a non-conference game on Friday.
• South Rowan won 16-5 against Concord in an SPC game on Friday. Logan Lowery had three hits and pitched a strong game. She fanned 12 and held the Spiders to five hits.
Alexcis Cameron drove in six runs for South. Kiala Dyer and McKenzie Ward had two hits each.
Will Collins (Salisbury) tied for eighth in the eGolf Tour’s Palmetto Hall Championship at Hilton Head, S.C.
Collins shot three 71s and won $2,700. He finished at 3-under, six shots off the pace.
• Alice and Burl Brady won low gross in the ‘C’ Division of the Four-Ball Getaway Tournament in the Dominican Republic.
Shaw topped Fayetteville State 73-70 for the CIAA tournament championship on Saturday in Charlotte. MVP Kamiya Burwell scored 18 for the Bears, who won their fourth straight title.
• Pfeiffer’s Amy Steller (Davie) finished second in Conference Carolinas in free-throw percentage. Steller made 86.9 percent from the foul line. She also finished in the top 10 in the league in steals and offensive rebounds. Steller scored 12 points and went 8-for-8 from the line in the season finale against Erskine.
