Indians win slugfest

Catawba’s baseball team outslugged Pfeiffer 13-9 on Tuesday.
T.J. Wharton, a junior transfer, tied the school record with eight RBIs. He hit two three-run homers at Pfeiffer’s Ferebee Field.
Catawba (2-7) also got five hits from Ethan Satterfield and two hits each by Paul Kronenfeld and Keaton Hawks.
Ryan McLintock was the winning pitcher in relief. Craig Brooks earned a save.
Dalton Lindley had three hits, including a two-run double for the Falcons (5-4).
The teams play again today at Newman Park at 5 p.m.
Catawba (3-1) split a doubleheader with Belmont Abbey (1-10) on Tuesday in Belmont.
Carley Tysinger fanned 10 in five innings in a n 8-0 Catawba win. Tysinger also had three hits, as did Sydney Hyder.
Belmont Abbey’s Samantha Jacobs (North Rowan) struck out eight in the opener.
Pitcher Catleyn Presley had a strong outing for Belmont Abbey in the nightcap.
Catawba’s teams are home tonight for a doubleheader with Lenoir-Rhyne that starts with the women’s game at 6 p.m.
• Livingstone’s teams are on the road tonight at St. Augustine’s for a CIAA doubleheader that starts at 5:30 p.m. with the women’s game.
Taylor Sehm-Crowley scored 36 points to lead Cox Mill to a 73-69 win against Hickory Ridge in a SPC first-round girls game.
Kiana Davis scored 18 to lead the Ragin’ Bulls.
Catawba announced its 2014 football schedule.
The Indians will take on Davidson and Western Carolina in road games to open the season.
Catawba’s other foes outside the SAC will be UNC Pembroke and North Greenville.
The Davidson game opens the season on Sept. 6.
East Rowan’s boys basketball team (15-4) closed the season with a 10-game winning streak and won the jayvee championship.
Datavian Davis scored 23 points and had eight rebounds for the Mustangs in a 60-53 win against South Rowan.
Bravon Goodlett had 14 points and five rebounds. Logan Shuping hit three 3-pointers and scored 12. Luca Morton had 10 rebounds.
• Carson’s jayvee boys (11-8) won 55-49 against Cox Mill in their final game.
Grayson Whicker scored 15 points. Brenden Westbrook had 14 points, and Malon Herron, Armoni Hogue and Bryson Collins scored six each.
Corriher-Lipe’s girls won 48-8 against Southeast.
Janiya Downs scored 20 points for the Yellow Jackets. Rhianna Kimmer had 14.
• Corriher-Lipe’s girls won 45-23 against North Rowan Middle.
Downs led the Yellow Jackets with 28 points. Haley Brigman scored 10, and Kimmer had five.
• Erwin’s boys won 50-38 against Knox.
Gabe Hinceman scored 32 points for the Eagles. Bryson Wagner added eight.
Erwin (4-2) plays China Grove Wednesday.
