Catawba’s basketball teams are home this afternoon for a doubleheader against Carson-Newman.
The women’s game starts at 2 p.m.
Carson-Newman has won four of the last five meetings of the men’s programs, although Catawba won at Goodman Gym last season.
Catawba (5-12, 5-8) is ninth in the SAC standings and needs wins to qualify for the conference tournament. The top eight teams make it. Carson-Newman (11-6, 8-5) is tied for fourth. The Eagles won 62-60 when the teams played in Jefferson City, Tenn., in December.
Catawba’s women (8-9, 6-7) have lost six of their last seven games and lost at Carson-Newman (12-7, 9-4) in December. The Indians are eighth in the SAC. Carson-Newman is tied for second, one game behind Wingate.
Livingstone hosts Winston-Salem State in a divisional doubleheader in the CIAA tonight at New Trent Gym. The women’s game starts at 5:30 p.m.
Livingstone’s men are 12-6, 5-4, while the women are 10-9, 5-4.
Winston-Salem State’s men (12-8, 7-3) are 7-2 at home, 3-4 on the road and 2-2 at neutral sites. The Rams had a big divisional win against Johnson C. Smith on Thursday.
Livingstone’s game was postponed on Wednesday, so the Blue Bears haven’t played since they lost to J.C. Smith a week ago.
North Rowan hosts Salisbury tonight in a CCC varsity doubleheader that was postponed on Tuesday. The girls game starts at 6 p.m.
• A.L. Brown and Concord will make up their game that was postponed on Wednesday on Friday, Feb. 14, at Rimer Gym.
• Davie’s boys lost 73-59 to R.J. Reynolds on Friday in CPC action.
Peyton Sell scored 20 points for the War Eagles, while Holden Poole had 10.
Jordan McDaniel added nine points, and Blaise Bennett had eight.
Davie’s jayvee girls won 51-33 against R.J. Reynolds on Friday.
Ally Wyrick scored 13 points. Ally Bohannon had 12 points and four assists. Jessica Beck had 10 points, seven steals and six assists.
• A.L. Brown’s girls won 28-13 against Robinson.
The Wonders are 13-1.
• The East Rowan jayvee boys won 58-36 against Northwest Cabarrus.
Logan Shuping shot 7-for-10 on 3-pointers and scored 23 points.
Datavian Davis had 14 points and six boards for the Mustangs (11-4). Lucas Morton scored seven points, and Corbin Elliott had five. East plays at West Rowan on Tuesday and takes on Hickory Ridge on Wednesday.
• Carson’s boys won 43-34 against South Rowan.
Brenden Westbroook scored 13 points for the Cougars. Bryson Collins and Armoni Hogue had 11 each.
Carson is 8-6.
Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot a final-round 70 on Friday in the Florida eGolf Tour’s Citrus Open.
Adams shot 211 for three rounds and tied for seventh place. He won $1,700.
Betsy Graham, head coach of Catawba College’ s Men’s and Women’s Swim Teams, has been recognized by the American Swimming Coaches Association as a Coach of Excellence for 2013. Her recognition was based on a top-8 finish at a USA Swimming national-level meet or a USA collegiate championship.
Graham was named head coach of the Catawba women’s swimming program in 2001. She launched the men’s program in 2006.  She came from the University of Arkansas, where she served as an assistant from 1996 until coming to Catawba.
Graham was a team captain at the University of Wyoming in 1987-88 and a NCAA Nationals qualifier in 1986 while swimming at Texas Tech. Graham was a senior national qualifier from 1984-86.

Catawba baseball opens today in Boca Raton, Fla., with a doubleheader against Lynn and plays at Nova Southeastern in Ft. Lauderdale on Sunday.

Catawba head coach Curtis Walker and his staff will host a recruiting showcase to discuss National Signing Day addtions to the program. The event will take place in Classroom 109 of Goodman Gym between games of the Catawba basketball doubleheader on Feb. 5 at about 7:45 p.m.
Coaches will give an inside look at the new players joining the program for the 2014 season as well as feature some video highlights. The basketball doubleheader with Queens begins at 6 p.m.
Rowan Little League baseball and softball registrations are from 8-4 on Feb. 1 and Feb. 8 at Godley’s Garden Center on Statesville Blvd.
Registrations also will be held at Salisbury Community Park concession stand from 8-4 on Feb. 15.

University of North Carolina at Pembroke announced Friday that Pete Shinnick has resigned his post as head football coach to take the same position at the University of West Florida.
Shinnick, who was responsible for building the football program at UNCP in 2007 after a more than 50-year hiatus, compiled a 50-24 record in seven seasons at the helm of the Braves.
The Black & Gold made a pair of playoff runs under his watch, including a second round appearance this past season.
Defensive coordinator Shane Richardson will serve as UNCP’s interim head coach during the search for a permanent appointment.
“It’s been a privilege to work with Pete Shinnick,” said UNCP director of athletics Dick Christy. “He built the brand and has positioned us in an outstanding way for the future.”
East Rowan Diamond Sports spring baseball and softball registration will be held February 25, 27, 28 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the East Rowan High cafeteria. The final on-site registration is on March 1 from 9-11 a.m. in the East cafeteria. Parents can also register online at www.eastrowandiamondsports.com beginning Saturday.
