CHARLOTTE (AP) — The Belk Foundation is giving Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools $500,000 to expand a program that lets teachers earn up to $23,000 a year more by taking on additional duties.
The program is designed to keep good teachers in the classroom by offering big raises in exchange for working with other teachers and more students.
The program started with four schools this year. The additional money will allow the program to expand to 17 more schools next year.
Educators expect the students of those teachers to show academic improvement. Officials also hope the program will help keep teachers in the classrooms.
