Carson, North Rowan win JV football titles

Carson and North Rowan won jayvee championships on Thursday night.
Carson (9-1, 8-0) finished a perfect SPC season by beating Cox Mill 28-18.
Jacob McCurry made the key play, a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown after Cox Mill had shaved a 21-6 Carson lead down to 21-18.
Dalton Cauble scored on runs of 8 and 22 yards for the Cougars.
Andy Lear threw a 44-yard TD pass to Armoni Hogue.
Tanner Christy and Conner Wilson led Carson’s defense.
Cole Howard kicked four PATs.
North 18, Salisbury 6
Joseph Scott rushed for two TDs and threw a scoring pass to Zion Debose to lead the Cavaliers, who secured the CCC championship.
Malik Alford and Daeshun Hargrave ran the ball well for North.
Defensively, North got sacks from Debose, Steven Thurston and Terry Cathcart and tackles for loss from linebackers Javon Goodine, Viv Lyles, Alonzo Sirleaf and Jaylen Brown.
Paris Hillie and Jericho Alexander stood out in the secondary for North, and R.J. Gaither and Zeth Robinson were tough at nose guard.
The highlight for Salisbury was a TD pass from Tyquan Jones to Will Steinman.
Jaylen McDowell starred for Salisbury’s defense.
West 35, Hickory Ridge 16
Javon Quarles scored two TDs for the Falcons.
L.J. Robinson, Lee Poteat and Juwan Houston scored one TD each.
Quarles and Poteat had 2-point conversions, and Robby Cogburn kicked a PAT.
Josh Wright, Shane Barber, Javon Lofton, Avery Allen and Mark Robbins led the blocking for the Falcons.
Austin Love, Craig Mattison, Amara Morris and Tyler Nichols sparked West’s defense.
West (8-1, 7-1) finished second in the league.
East 21, South Rowan 0
Keith Tillman scored two TDs to lead the Mustangs.
Zach Green scored the other TD.
Brown 28, Hopewell 14
The Wonders used a dominant offensive line and rushing attack to finish 8-2. They lost only to Mallard Creek in MECKA play.
Brandon Lyles scored twice for the Wonders. Jalen Cagle and JaQuerius Bost had one TD apiece.
Davie 34, Mount Tabor 14
The War Eagles rolled to finish 6-4 overall and 3-2 in the CPC.
Prep soccer
Salisbury’s 2A quarterfinal matchup with West Caldwell will be played at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Ludwig Stadium.
College football
UNC Pembroke won 34-29 at Valdosta State on Thursday.
Ben DeCelle (East Rowan) had five catches for 41 yards for the Braves (8-1), and T.J. Johnson (A.L. Brown) had two catches for 34 yards.
Cadarreus Mason (South Rowan) made one tackle.
UNCP QB Luke Charles threw for 408 yards.
Local golf
In the eGolf Tour’s Cabarrus Classic at Cabarrus Country Club, Adam Webb and T.J. Howe share the second-round lead at 11-under 133.
Salisbury’s Frank Adams III is tied for sixth after shooting 69-68 — 137.
The cutline fell at 3-under. Will Collins (Salisbury) was at even-par 144.
Prep hoops
The dates for the 40th annual Sam Moir Christmas Basketball Classic at Catawba are Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 26-28.

College soccer
Pfeiffer’s women beat King 2-0 on Thursday to reach Saturday’s Conference Carolinas tournament championship game.
Pfeiffer will play at Belmont Abbey at 1 p.m.
