The expanded soccer state playoffs look a lot like the football playoffs now.
Salisbury (21-1) got the No. 1 seed in the 32-team West bracket in 2A.
The Hornets plan to play their first-round match against No. 32 seed East Burke (7-11-1) at home tonight at 6 p.m.
“With all the changes to the brackets and all the talk of facing new opponents, we still drew the same team we played in the first round last season,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said.
If Salisbury reaches Saturday’s second round, the Hornets would host the Lexington-Hendersonville winner.
“There are some tough teams in our part of the bracket,” said Parrish, listing CATA, Forbush, Trinity and Newton-Conover as strong potential opponents.
Salisbury has 10 seniors, veterans who were sophomores on the 2011 championship team. Salisbury has only one junior, Michael Brown, who was a freshman phenom on that 2011 team.
Salisbury’s current sophomore class is another deep one.
“We’ve got a bunch of guys who have known each other and played with each other since they were 4 or 5 years old,” Parrish said. “We’ve got some kids who have been well-schooled by parents and youth coaches, and the things that I’ve put my own spin on, they’ve bought into and accepted.”
Salisbury won its 10th straight CCC title this year and hasn’t lost since it fell to 3A Statesville on Aug. 26.
The Hornets are riding a 19-game winning streak entering the playoffs. Bobby Cardelle has been the top scorer for the Hornets.
• Carson lost 6-3 to Salisbury early this season but has carved out a 15-4 record and won the SPC championship with a late surge.
Carson is the No. 5 seed in the 32-team 3A West bracket and opens the playoffs at home on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Hickory (10-8-5).
Five more SPC teams — Concord, Hickory Ridge, Northwest Cabarrus, Cox Mill and Central Cabarrus — are in the bracket.
Carson has won six in a row and 10 of 11. Brandon Flores has been the top scorer for the Cougars.

South Rowan’s Alexandria Bare is competing in the 3A golf state championships as an individual.
Bare shot 95 in the first round at Foxfire on Monday.
South Brunswick’s Amy Sloup shot 75 to lead the field.
Carson travels to Hickory St. Stephens tonight for the 3A West final.
Both teams are undefeated. Carson is 33-0, while St. Stephens is 27-0.
Both teams are led by seniors.
Seniors Breanna Hall, Jenna Boliek and Kately Houser are the biggest hitters for St. Stephens.
Hall leads the team in kills with 239 and has 61 solo blocks.
Senior libero Ashley Markland, leads in digs with 344. Ashley’s mother, Cheryl, coaches the Indians. Her father, Dave, coaches Lenoir-Rhyne.
Seniors Michaela White, Madison Weast and Hannah Elmore get most of the kills for the Cougars, who reached the state championship game in 2012. Sophomore Morgan Hester is the setter.
Salisbury rolled 6-0 in a 2A quarterfinal against Hendersonville on Monday and now must hit the road for the second time in the playoffs.
On Wednesday, the Hornets will play at Lake Norman Charter (Charter’s 17-1 record is better than Salisbury’s 16-3) in the West final.
Salisbury is seeking its sixth straight state title.
The cross country state championships will be held on Saturday at Kernersville’s Beeson Park.
Led by Conor Honeycutt, East Rowan’s boys qualified as a team entry in 3A.
Carson’s Zachary Marchinko, West’s Rebecca Parker and Salisbury’s Susannah Dixon were individual qualifiers.
• Salisbury’s Matt Washko was the top finisher for the Hornet boys in Saturday’s 2A Midwest Regional. He placed 24th in 17:57.
The registration dates for the Rowan County Youth Wrestling League have been announced.

The FCCA Green Dragons (10-2-1) won a regional match by a score of 8-5 over the weekend.
Maddox Goodnight scored three goals. Ben Childress had two goals, and Wade Robins, Will Koontz and Colin Donaldson had one each.
Leading the defensive effort were Ben Sweet, Will Webb, Hank Webb and Bennett Clark.
The 2nd annual AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary “Every Child First” was played on Saturday at McCanless.
The format was four-man Captain’s Choice.
The team of Ricky and Treva Honeycutt and Brian Reynolds placed first.
The team of Kevin Thompson, Jerry Wright, David Huneycutt and Beverly Cobb placed second. The team of Tommy and Yvonne Barger, Phil Cline and Robin Helms was third.
The winner of the men’s longest drive was Billy Ray Corriher. Brian Reynolds won longest putt. Treva Honeycutt won longest drive and closest to the pin for the ladies.
