Carson soccer leads SPC

Carson’s soccer team stayed in first place with a 4-2 SPC win at Central Cabarrus on Monday.
Khalid Myers, Brandon Flores, Pedro Perez and Fox Correll scored goals for the Cougars. Perez and Colton Correll had assists.
Myers, a freshman, had the goal that put the Cougars up 1-0 at halftime.
Freshman keeper Grayson Owens stopped a PK with Carson leading 2-1. With the Cougars leading 3-2, Flores fired a long shot off the crossbar, and Logan Correll followed up for the goal.
The Cougars play at home against East Rowan tonight and close the regular season on Thursday against Northwest Cabarrus.
• West Rowan beat East Rowan 2-1 for its first NPC victory.
Carson is at home at 6 p.m. tonight in the second round of the 3A playoffs. The Cougars (30-0) take on Newton Fred T. Foard (16-8).
The Cougars beat North Lincoln in the first round, Foard won against Weddington. Tonight’s winner will play the Hickory-South Iredell survivor on Thursday.
East Rowan (13-1) is at home today against sixth-ranked Weddington (10-4) in the second round of the 3A dual state playoffs.
East won 5-4 against Hibriten in the first round. Weddington won 6-0 against Cuthbertson.
Top-ranked Salisbury (14-3) is at second-ranked Brevard (16-2) in a second-round matchup in 2A that might determine the state championship.
Salisbury rolled over Forest Hills in the first round, whiel Brevard dispatched West Lincoln.
In a 1A second-round match, second-ranked Gray Stone (17-3) is home against Avery County.
• Individual state tournament action resumes Friday with six Salisbury players in the 2A tournament at Cary and East’s Lizzie Weaver playing in the 3A tournament in Burlington.

Salisbury hosts the 1A-2A Central Regional Golf Tournament today at the Country Club of Salisbury.
Salisbury’s Madeline Hoskins will tee off at 8 a.m. She’ll be followed by Isabella Rusher (8:10), Grace Yatawara (8:20), Caroline Parrott (8:30) and Shelby Holden (8:40).
Gray Stone also was a team qualifier.
• In the 3A Central Regional held in Winston-Salem on Monday, Ledford’s Alexis Kershaw shot 73 for the individual title and helped Ledford win the regional championship. Central Davidson’s Victoria Hedrick shot 79 for second place. SPC medalist Jaime Cassell shot 87 and tied for ninth.
The top three teams and top 17 finishers from non-qualifying teams will play in next week’s state tournament at Foxfire Resort in Pinehurst. The three qualifying teams were Ledford (240), Northern Guilford (258) and Cardinal Gibbons (269).
West Rowan won 26-21 against East Rowan on Monday night.
Lee Poteat threw two touchdown passes to Juwan Houston, and L.J. Robinson had two rushing TDs for the Falcons and a 2-point conversion.
Amari Morris, Jonathan Johnson and J.T. Sanders led West’s defense.
USC Upstate’s Ross Oden (East Rowan) ran a season-best 8K time of 25:29 to finish 33rd in the Blue Ridge Open Gold race held Friday in Boone.
Nick Lyerly won the freshman-sophomore division in the UNC Tarheel State Junior Championship held at Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill.
Lyerly shot 71-73 — 144 to win by one shot.
Davis Richards shot 75-74 — 149 and tied for seventh in the junior-senior division.
• The Country Club of Salisbury’s annual Brawl in the Fall pits the Grizzled Vets (50-over) and the Young Guns (50-under) against each other in a Ryder Cup style event.
Saturday’s play included four-ball match play and alternate-shot matches. The Grizzled Vets led 10.5 to 6.5 after the first day.
Singles matches were held Sunday, and the Grizzled Vets prevailed in a 21.5 to 11.5 landslide.
• The McCanless Couples played a four-man Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
Winning team members were Sharon Miller, Ben Miller, Allen Drew and Frank Foster. The team of Ricky Honeycutt, Phyllis Myers, Susan Houston and Don Goodnight finished second. Longest putt was won by Myers. Closest to the pin was won by Ty Cobb.
• The Warrior Golf Club’s Tough Turkey Day is coming up on Nov. 9. A shotgun start is set for 9 a.m.
The cost is $35 for members and $65 for non-members. Four-Man Dog Fight teams will be chosen baesd on handicap or average score.
Entries must be received by Nov. 7. The first 120 will be accepted.
West Rowan Middle’s No. 1 seed Payton Holt finished undefeated this season.
The seventh grader won 102 games, while losing only eight.
The FCCA Green Dragons (9-2-1) had a win and a tie in regional matches over the weekend.
In an 8-1 win, Colin Donaldson scored three goals. Oscar Enciso, Maddox Godnight, Wade Robins, Hank Webb and Will Webb scored one each.
In a 4-4 tie, the Green Dragons rallied from a 4-0 deficit. Enciso scored twice. Robins and Will Webb also scored. Ben Childress had seven assists in the two games. Ben Sweet, Will Koontz and Bennett Clark led the defense.
The Hurley YMCA Warriors did an outstanding job at the 5K Hawg Run in Lexington
