CONCORD — Food Lion and the Cabarrus County Fair will offer free admission from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday for people who bring canned goods for hunger relief efforts.
Adults who bring four canned food items and children who bring two cans will get into the fair for free.
Sunday will mark the second annual Food Lion Hunger Relief Day at the Cabarrus Arena & Events Center on 4751 N.C. Highway 49 N.
“Last year’s effort to help Cabarrus County families brought in more than 25,000 pounds of food,” said Kristen Talley, Food Lion’s director of operations for the Concord area. “We are excited to again offer this opportunity to fair attendees so they can gain free admittance to the fair and help local hungry families as well.”
Donations received through the effort will assist families in Cabarrus County struggling to put food on the table. Once the food is collected, Cooperative Christian Ministries will assist in distributing the food amongst the other participating Cabarrus County food pantries.
“With the increased needs our pantries are currently experiencing and the economic climate, we’re thrilled to be able to offer an opportunity to not only give directly back to the community but help hardworking fairgoers save a little bit of money,” said Kate Sharpe, Fair and Events director for the Cabarrus County Fair.
Volunteers from Food Lion, local Cabarrus County food pantries and Cabarrus Helping Hearts and Hands and will accept donations at a dedicated food donation gate located next to the main entrance gate. No items stored in glass will be accepted.
