South Rowan’s Davis Richards shot 68 to lead after the first round of the Tarheel Youth Golf Assocation Tournament of Champions being held at Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro.
South’s Evan Neas shot 77 and is tied for 10th.
In the 14-15 division, Nick Lyerly, who will be a freshman at East Rowan, shot 77 to tie for eighth. East’s Logan Shuping shot 81.
In the 12-13 division, Michael Childress shot 74 for third place, while Bryson Sprinkle shot 86.
In the 11-under division, Ben Childress finished the first round tied for third.
• The team of Jim Christy-Mallory McDaniel shot 70 in the first round of the North Carolina Senior Four-Ball Championship being held at Bermuda Run, good for a tie for 17th.
Stan Honeyuctt-Troy Payne shot 71. They’re tied for 25th.
• The Corbin Hills ladies played their weekly tournament Tuesday. Mary Seaford won low gross, with Cindy Carmazzi second.
Norma Burgess won low net, with Carolyn Ries second. Eileen Full won low putts.
• George Glover shot his age at the Country Club of Salisbury on Tuesday. Glover’s age was not revealed.
•The third annual Debbie Barrier Plummer Memorial Golf Tournament will be at Corbin Hills on Sept. 7.
Lunch will be served at noon. The shotgun start is at 1:30 p.m.
The format is Captain’s Choice. Cost is $50 per person or $200 per team.
The tournament honors Debbie’s courageous fight against cancer. Proceeds go to help families (indentified by local cancer agencies) with medical expenses.

Catawba had six players named to the preseason All-SAC team that was released on Tuesday.
First-teamers are defensive lineman Jacob Hanes (three sacks), punter Chad Hollandsworth (37.2 average) and returner/defensive back L.J. McCray (two picks, one return TD). McCray was first team at both spots.
Second-teamers are receiver Nate Charest (52 catches, 588 yards, five TDs), dfefensive lineman Damein Lee (three sacks) and linebacker Jason Taylor (83 tackles).
Lenoir-Rhyne running back Ike Whitaker (Salisbury) was named to the second team. Whitaker rushed for 874 yards and five TDs.
The Kannapolis Intimidators got homers from Adam Heisler and Jacob May and beat Lakewood 12-8 on Tuesday.
The Great American Rivalry Series selects the 100 best rivalry games from across the country, and has chosen A.L. Brown-Concord (Aug. 23) as one of three North Carolina games this season. The others will be Pisgah-Tuscola and Page-Grimsley in October.
Scholarships, trophies and MVP awards are part of the series.
Anyone interested in playing football for Southeast Middle should report to the school on Friday, Aug. 16, at 4 p.m.
Practice will last two hours. Players should bring a completed physical and cleats.
Parents should pick the players up promptly at 6 p.m.
Reserve seats for Carson football will be on sale at the school from 5:30-7:30 p.m. tonight, Wednesday and Thursday. The cost is $35. Seats are available to all.
