Dixon shoots 62 in golf tourney

Roy Dixon (Salisbury, UNC Greensboro) shot 62 in the first round of stroke-play qualifying in the North Carolina Match Play Championship.
The 20-year-old Dixon’s 9-under, 32-30 effort gave him a two-shot lead at Carolina Country Club in Raleigh.
•In the CPGA Senior Championship at Pine Island, Kannapolis’ Rick Lewallen shot 72-69 — 141 and tied for ninth. He won $532.50.
•In the 64th Carolinas Junior Championship at Willow Creek in High Point, South Rowan’s Davis Richards is at 73-72 — 145 after two rounds and is tied for 12th. The cutline fell at 154. The top 60 golfers advanced to today’s third round. Davis has a 9:10 tee time.
• In the eGolf Tour’s River Run Classic in Durham, Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot a first-round 68 and is tied for second place. Will Collins (Salisbury) shot 76. Storms did not allow every golfer to finish the round.
• In the Twin State Junior Girls Golf Championship at Mimosa Hills in Morganton, Salisbury’s Isabella Rusher shot 73-83 — 156 and tied for 25th.
All interested football players at West Rowan should be in the locker room by 4:30 p.m. today ­— rain or shine — for the first practice.
The workout will follow from 5-7:45 p.m. All prospects must have physicals to participate.
• Today is the first official date for all NCHSAA fall sports teams, including football. The first five days of practice must be used for physical conditioning.
On the first two days of football practice, headgear, shorts and football shoes constitute acceptable dress. On days three, four and five, shoulder pads may be added but no contact is permitted. Practice time during the first five-day period shall be limited to three hours, including stretching and breaks.
On day six, full uniforms may be worn and body-to-body contact is allowed.
The first official date for football scrimmages is Aug. 10, and the first official playing date for the 2013 season is Aug 23.

In the 9-year-old division in the 1500, Karrigan Foster was 49th in 7:52. Matthew Burroughs was 35th in 6:06. Nate Shaffer was 45th in 6:39.
In the 10-year-old division in the 1500, Noah Julian finished 40th in 5:49, while Parker Westbrook was 41st in 5:51.
In the 800, Eli Julian was 13th in 2:49.89. Foster was 74th in 4:00.70. Burroughs was 53rd in 2:59.19. Shaffer was 63rd in 3:06.22.
Noah Julian was 45th in 2:49.08. Westbrook was 56th in 2:52. Cressle was 52nd in 2:50.78. Shaffer was 31st in the turbo javelin with an effort of 32 feet, 10 inches.
