West Rowan’s Junior American Legion team stayed alive in the state tournament on Sunday with a 16-2 five-inning romp against Morehead City.
West (19-13) scored 10 runs in the first inning and breezed from there to win by the 10-run rule.
Tyler Poteat pitched a three-hitter and struck out two.
Margarito Romero and Wyatt Martin had two hits each. Hunter Shepherd, Poteat, Caleb Link and Kacey Otto had one each.
Shepherd, Otto and Hunter Bernhardt had two RBIs each.
The four eastern teams — Swansboro, Morehead City, Cary and Chatham County have been eliminated.
South Caldwell, Kernersville, Mint Hill and West are the four teams still playing.
West plays in a 10 a.m. elimination game today.
Randolph County swept the best-of-three Area III championship series. Both games were played at McCrary Park because the state Junior Legion tournament is being held at Kernersville’s field.
Randolph (31-5) beat Kernersville (29-8) 10-6 on Sunday after winning 5-3 on Saturday.
Hunter Jobe retired the first 12 Kernersville hitters he faced on Sunday, as Randolph built a 10-0 lead.
Avery Jackson had three hits, including a homer, for Randolph, while Tanner Routh had a two-run single.
Bump Martin had a two-run single for Kernersville.
Randolph didn’t lose a game in the Area III playoffs.
Both teams advance to the state tournament in Wilson. Games start there on July 26. The Area III teams will be matched against Area IV squads in the early games on the first day.
The Kannapolis Intimidators dropped their eighth straight to the West Virginia Power on Sunday, losing 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth.
Josh Bell hit a two-run homer for the Power in the first, and his flyball in the ninth scored the winning run.
Nick Basto and Kale Kiser had two hits each to lead Kannapolis’ eight-hit attack.
The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice format on Sunday.
The winning team members were Robin Leslie, Frank Foster and Ricky Honeycutt.
The second-place team was Tim Earnhardt and Gene and Mary Seaford.
Leslie won longest putt and closest to the pin.
Salisbury soccer camp will be instructed by Matt Parrish, who coaches the boys and girls teams at Salisbury.
The camp is for rising seventh graders through rising seniors, both male and female. Camp runs from July 29-Aug. 2 from 9 until noon at the SHS practice field adjacent to the school.
Camp costs $65 for all players and includes a camp shirt.
Checks (made payable to Matt Parrish) or cash will be accepted.
Players are encouraged to bring water, but they do not need to bring a ball.
This camp is not required for participation on the high school team. Tryouts start Aug. 5.
