Get new, corn-y recipes at Farmers Market

SALISBURY — Toi Degree, family and consumer science agent with Cooperative Extension Service, will be demonstrating how to make fresh corn fritters and corn, tomatoes and basil salad.
Both recipes feature corn, but in a totally different way. Both dishes will be prepared on site using fresh and local produce from market vendors.
Those interested in learning how to use these locally grown vegetables are encouraged to come to the market to see Degree, sample the variety of ways you can prepare corn and shop for the upcoming week. There will be recipes for each of the dishes and well as other recipes that you might find helpful. WIC vouchers are now being accepted at the Salisbury Farmers Market.

• Crowder peas make their first appearance this week.
• Local honey is now at the Salisbury Farmers Market.
• Fresh local garlic is still plentiful.
• Beautiful cut flowers continue to be plentiful.
• Green beans are in limited quantity and usually sell out early.
• Assorted beef, chicken and pork products are available.
• Local handmade cheese from Iredell County.
• Local field grown tomatoes have just arrived.
• Goat milk soap is on sale-good for skin problems.
• Okra is plentiful.

• Handmade custom birdhouses are still a favorite.
• Homemade dog treats are available.
• Home baked goods continue to be a market favorite.
It is important to shop early to get the best selection as some items may be limited. Local growers make a special effort to produce clean and safe produce for their shoppers.
The market opens at 8 a.m. to noon. The market is at the corner of South Jackson and West Fisher streets in downtown Salisbury near Rowan Public Library.
