Rowan captures 5th consecutive victory

Rowan County’s Legion baseball team defeated Mocksville 6-1 Tuesday in a non-league game for its fifth consecutive win.
Rowan’s Heath Mitchem pitched six innings to pick up the win. Chance Bowden had two doubles and Michael Caldwell collected three hits.
Taylor Garczynski drove in a run with a double. Ryan Jones, Brandon White and Brian Bauk each tossed an inning in relief.
“We’ve played some poor defense lately but tonight we didn’t make an error,” Rowan coach Jim Gantt said. “I liked our approach at the plate. We took walks but were aggressive.”
Harrison Baucom had two hits for Rowan (14-7 5-0). Rowan plays at Stanly County tonight and hosts Stanly Thursday. Rowan hosts Concord Friday.
• Wilkes Post 51 defeated the Mooresville Legends 6-3. Tanner Little had a big night for Wilkes with three hits, including a two-run homer. Ben Church was the starter and pitched six innings for the win. The Legends were led at the plate by Anthony Fucci with two hits. Wesley Ludwig pitched well in the loss.
Catawba coach Jim Gantt said Chris Dula is expected to sign with the Texas Rangers. Dula, the SAC Athlete of the Year, was selected by Texas in the 25th round of the player entry draft earlier this month.

Kannapolis’ Junior Legion was beaten by Concord 4-3.
Leading Kannapolis (2-4) with two hits was Michael Young.

Sixty-eight GARS members played in foursomes at Warrior on Monday.
Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 60.49 was Tom Talbert. Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 62.33 was Guy Schenk. Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 63.42 was Larry Ries. Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 62.33 was Harold Caudill.
•Davis Richards and Michael Childress are competing in sectional qualifying in Raleigh for the 66th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.
Sectional qualifying is 36 holes of stroke play.

• South Rowan’s Davis Richards is tied for seventh place with a 1-over par at the USGA Junior Amateur Qualifying at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State.
Michael Childress is tied for 68th place with an 83. The second and final round of qualifying is today.

Catawba women’s basketball players Chloe Bully and Antoinette McPhail were named to the N.C. Collegiate Sports Information Assocation All-State team.
Bully was an All-SAC pick as a sophomore that averaged 14.6 points and 4.3 assists a game. McPhail averaged 11.3 points and 8.4 rebounds a game and was also All-SAC.

Appalachian State’s Anna Freeman was named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association University Division All-State team.
Freeman, who starred at East Davidson, is ASU’s all-time leader in blocks and steals and ranks second in points and rebounds. She’s fourth in assists.
Freeman started every game for four years at ASU and scored 1,858 points.

Nine of the Hurley YMCA Warriors competed at a USATF national qualifier. Top-five finishers qualified for USATF Junior Olympics.
Eli Julian, 7, qualified in the 800 (2.54.18) and with a third-place finish in the 1500 (5:45.81).
Jalen Houston, 11, was fourth in the 80-meter hurdles in 14.12. He was 11th in the 100 (13.77) and 20th in the 200 (29.13).
Abigail Calvert, 8, was 16th in the 800 (3:36) and sixth in the 1500 (7:31).
Emma Calvert, 9, was 18th in the 800 (3:09) and seventh in the 1500 (6:19).
Noah Julian, 10, was 20th in the 800 (2:54.64) and 10th in the 1500 (5:47).
Parker Westbrook, 10, 22nd in the 800 (2:55.38) and 20th in the 1500 (6:09).
Matthew Burroughs, 9, was 30th in the 800 (3:03) and 21st in the 1500 (6:12).
Andrew Burgess, 12, was seventh in the 1500 (4:53) and eighth in the 3000 (10:45).
Tabitha Landy, 13, was 20th in the 100 (13.30) and 32nd in the 200 (27.96).

Kannapolis defeated Rome 9-6 in 13 innings Tuesday. It was the Intimidators’ third-straight win. Stew Brase tossed three scoreless innings in relief. Kale Kiser broke a 6-6 tie with a go-ahead double. Michael Johnson drove in Kiser with an RBI. White Sox first-round pick Tim Anderson had a triple and a double while driving in a run.

A soccer camp will be held at South Rowan on July 8-11 for rising K-8th grade boys and girls.
