Authorities seized 171 grams (6 ounces) of marijuana and 11 grams (.39 ounces) of crack cocaine after stopping a motorist driving on a suspended license. A Salisbury police officer checked the license plate, which indicated the vehicle belonged to a man later identified as Miguel Angel Urrutia. The officer pulled Urrutia over at the intersection of North Craige Street and the 600 block of West Innes Street.
Police charged Urrutia, 22, of the 400 block of West Thomas Street, with two counts possession with the intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a controlled schedule II substance, two counts possession with the intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a controlled schedule VI substance, and maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance, all felonies.
The officer smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle, searched the car and found drugs in the center console. The officer seized 11 grams of marijuana divided into nine separate bags, 29 grams (1 ounce) of marijuana, and 3 grams (.1 ounces) of crack cocaine. The officer also found other drugs in the back seat inside a drawstring bag. The drugs and other items found in the back seat were: 131 grams (4.6 ounces) of marijuana divided into five separate bags, 8 grams (.28 ounces) of crack cocaine, digital scales and sandwich bags. The officer found a Remington .223-caliber rifle.
Urrutia has been convicted in the past of drug possession, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of stolen goods. Urrutia remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $50,000 secured bond.
