Hayes to compete

Livingstone’s Quanera Hayes will compete in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Oregon today. Hayes will run in a women’s 400-meter prelim at 6:20 p.m. on ESPN 2.
The Championships serve as the selection event for Team USA berths for the IAAF World Championships to be held in Moscow on Aug. 10-18.
Jake Kennedy (West Rowan) won twice in match play in the North Carolina Junior Boys Championships held at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary on Wednesday.
Kennedy won 4 and 3 against High Point’s Harrison Frye in the round of 64. Kennedy won in the round of 32 by beating Harrisburg’s Davis Kiger 4 and 3.
Kennedy will face Durham’s McKenzie Barringer in the round of 16 today. Tee time is 8:49 a.m.
In Tuesday’s qualifying, Kennedy shot 75.
The cutline for qualifying for match play was 76. Michael Childress shot 77. Davis Richards shot 80. Logan Shuping shot 81.
• In the North Carolina Junior Girls Championship being held at Bentwinds Country Club in Fuquay-Varina, Isabella Rusher (Salisbury), the defending champ, lost in the second round.
Rusher won 3 and 1 over Wilmington’s Caroline Cahill in the first round. Cary’s Meghan Symonds topped Rusher in 19 holes in the round of 16.
Grace Yatawara (Salisbury) lost in the round of 32 to Greensboro’s Savanna Mackie in a match that took 20 holes.
• In the eGolf Tour’s Mimosa Hills Open in Morganton, Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot a first-round 70.
• The 35th annual Horace Billings Rowan County Amateur Golf Championship will be held at Corbin Hills.
Qualifying dates are July 12, 13 and 14. Championship dates are July 19, 20 and 21.
Residents of Rowan County and members of Rowan golf clubs are eligible.
Qualifying is by stroke play, with the low 31 scores and the defending champion advancing to the match play championship.
Players tied for medalist honors will compete in a nine-hole playoff on July 15 at 5 p.m. Players tied for the final qualifying spot will compete in a sudden-death playoff on July 15 at 5:30 p.m.
The entry fee is $20 and does not include green fee or cart fee for the championship.
Entry deadline is July 10 at 5 p.m.

Catawba defender Anna Toole was named to the North Carolina Sports Information Association College Division All-State women’s soccer team.
Toole made the second team.
• Catawba’s Carson Smith was named to the North Carolina Sports Information Association College Division All-State men’s soccer team.
Smith was named to the first team. Smith had five goals and nine assists.
West Rowan Youth Wrestling Camp will be held on July 23-25 from 4-7:30 in the West Rowan High wrestling room. The cost is $40.
