West Rowan rolled 14-2 in five innings at Statesville in NPC action on Thursday.
Omar Bautista did the pitching and fanned nine.
Cody McNeely knocked in three runs, while Michael Pinkston and Juan Garcia drove in two apiece.
West (5-0, 1-0) is at South Rowan (3-0, 1-0) tonight in a big early-season NPC matchup.
West hasn’t been 5-0 since 2004, while South hasn’t been 3-0 since 2008.
South opened NPC play with a win against West Iredell on Wednesday.
• Davie beat Carson 9-3 in non-conference action on Thursday.
Garrett Nestor and Matt Vernon hit three-run homers for the War Eagles (2-0).
Vernon’s three-run blast in the sixth put the game away.
Jeremy Walker pitched five strong innings for Davie. Elijah Jones was strong out of the bullpen and finished up.
Colton Laws took the loss for the Cougars (3-2).
Carson plays Salisbury at home this afternoon.
Davie plays at Salisbury in a makeup game on Saturday.
• Northwest Cabarrus beat Concord 10-4 on Thursday in SPC action.
UNC signee Tanner Bigham had a grand slam, a solo homer and a two-run double to account for seven RBIs in Northwest Cabarrus’ 10-4 win against Concord.
Tyler Thomas got the win for the Trojans (2-2, 1-0).
•In East Rowan’s 9-1 loss to Providence on Wednesday, Michael Caldwell drove in the run for the Mustangs (2-2) in the seventh.
Caldwell had two of East’s six hits. Ike Freeman’s double was East’s only extra-base hit.
Chase Jarrett (0-2) pitched three innings and took the mound loss. Joseph Peeler, Holden Ingold and Harrison Bell pitched an inning apiece.
Freeman is 7-for-11 this season and is batting .636. Hunter Brooks is batting .545, while Jarrett is batting .462.
East plays an NPC game at West Iredell tonight.
• In North Rowan’s 5-4, eight-inning YVC loss to Albemarle on Thursday, Chance Mazza had two of North’s six hits.
Noah Gonzalez and Tyler Mulkey drove in runs for the Cavaliers (0-3, 0-2).
Travis Holshouser pitched into the eighth inning and held the Bulldogs to six hits. He struck out 13 and walked one.
• The Statesville-Salisbury game that was scheduled for Wednesday was postponed to April 24.

Local golf

The Warrior Two-Man Mulligan is set for this weekend, March 9-10.
Entries are open to the first 64 paid teams. Teams will be flighted after the first round.
• The Corbin Hills Spring Two-Man Tournament is set for April 13-14.
There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. both days.
Teams will play six holes each of Captain’s Choice, Best Ball and Texas Scramble each day. Teams will be flighted after the first round.
Entry fee is $75 per player.

Baseball at the Beach

Baseball at the Bech has a few spots left for 10U and 9U teams for the weekend of March 16-17.

Cannon School beat Concord 157-183.
Noah Edmonson shot 38 and Anthony Perrino shot 39 to lead Cannon. Walker Cress shot 40 to lead the Spiders.
• Irish Creek is hosting the Rowan-Cabarrus Challenge on Monday, March 11. Tee time is 1 p.m.
Many of the state’s ranked juniors will be involved.

Women’s basketball

Former East Davidson standout Anna Freeman and Maryah Sydnor were named as Appalachian State’s representatives on the All-Southern Conference team.

7th-grade girls hoops

West Rowan wrapped the regular season with a 33-29 win against China Grove.
Parker Greene had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six steals for the Bulldogs. Niaja Wilson had nine points. Emily Spry hit two clutch free throws late.
Riley Corriher led the Red Devils with 16 points.
The conference tournament starts Saturday.
• Erwin trailed by 11 after three quarters but rallied to win 35-34 against Knox.
Anna Shafer scored the winning basket for Erwin (8-6) with three seconds left. Shafer had eight points and 11 rebounds.
Sydney Taylor scored 15 points for the Eagles, 11 in the final quarter, and had the assist on the winning bucket.
Gracie Honeycutt had eight rebounds, and Mia Graham and Caroline Johnson had six each.
Myanna Hillie scored 24 for Knox (4-10) and had 16 of the Trojans’ 18 second-half points.
•North Rowan finished the regular season with a 50-25 win against Corriher-Lipe.
Egypt Alexander led the Mavericks with 16 points. Tanajah Robinson scored 14, and Meliya Parker had 12.
Taylor Wiggins led the Yellow Jackets with nine points.

7th-grade boys hoops

West Rowan completed the regular season with a 60-25 win against China Grove.
Olen Stamper hit five 3-pointers and scored 20 for the Bulldogs. Caleb Mauldin had 10 points. Malcolm Ingram scored eight for the Bulldogs (8-6), while Cole Myers had six.
Josh Sifford scored seven for China Grove.

College baseball

Pfeiffer split Thursday’s doubleheader at Ferebee Field with Lake Erie.
Pfeiffer lost 10-3 and won 3-2.
Izzy Perez hit a two-run homer in the nightcap for the Falcons (6-14).

College swimming

Catawba’s Sebastian Holmberg finished fifth in the 100 butterfuly at the Division II Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday and earned All-America honors.
Holmberg swam a school-record 47.88 seconds.
Holmberg will swim in the 100 backstroke today. Holmberg and Catawba’s Magnus Lundgren will compete in the 100 freestyle on Saturday.

College tennis

Catawba’s tennis teams won in Hilton Head, S.C., on Thursday to close a successful trip.
The Catawba men (9-5) beat Tennessee Wesleyan 6-3.
The Catawba women (10-4) beat Tennessee Wesleyan 7-2.

Hurley YMCA

Registrations are under way at the J.F. Hurley YMCA for spring soccer and flag football leagues for grades K-8.
The leagues teach basic skills and fundamentals.
Registrations lasts until March 31.

Youth racing

Millbridge Speedway opens its gates for the 2013 season on Wednesday, March 13.
Millbridge Speedway has hosted go-kart and stepping-stone racing for young drivers for almost 30 years. In those years, the facility has gone through ups and downs. Five years ago the track was dormant and had not operated for quite some time.
In 2009, Ashly and Jeremy Burnett acquired a lease for the property, becoming the track’s new promoters and began restoring the Speedway.
New walls have been installed, a new timing and scoring system have been implemented, along with a new track configuration. Flat corners have been replaced with progressive high banking to encourage side-by-side racing.
Along with the go-karts, the Mini Outlaw Series has been added as the headlining division.
The track is family fun for all ages. Drivers range from 4-year-old Beginner Box Stock Champion Gavan Bochelle to teenagers and adult drivers. It’s commonplace to see NASCAR Stars like Jimmy Elledge, Justin Alligier, Kasey Kahne and Tony Stewart strolling around the pits or making cameo appearances on any given Wednesday evening.
Karsyn Elledge is the daughter of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series crew chief Jimmy Elledge and grand-daughter of the late Dale Earnhardt. She will begin her title defense as Millbridge Speedway Box Stock Champion.
Jimmy Elledge will also defend his 500cc Open division title.
Gates open at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Practice begins at 7, with racing at 8.
Adult tickets are $10, tickets for ages 7-12 are $6 and 6 and under get in free.
