Work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, March 12, on a $1.7 million project to replace the Moose Road bridge over Lake Fisher in Kannapolis. The new bridge will improve motorist safety and extend the life of the local transportation network.
The existing bridge was built in 1959 and has a sufficiency rating of 8.1 out of 100. That does not mean the bridge is unsafe. It means the bridge was not built to modern design standards and no longer meets the needs of today’s drivers. The new bridge will be 32 feet wide – 10 feet wider than the existing bridge. The additional room will allow for wider travel lanes and shoulders.
Crews with Smith-Rowe LLC of Mount Airy will construct the new bridge in the same location as the existing bridge. This process will require closing the existing bridge to traffic and installing the following detour route: Moose Road to China Grove Road to Lane Street to Turkey Road back to Moose Road. The closure is currently set to begin on March 12.
The N.C. Department of Transportation urges motorists driving near the work zone to go slow, pay attention to construction-related signs and allow extra time to get where they need to go safely.
The project is scheduled to be complete by April 30, 2014.
