If you’ve enjoyed watching the West Rowan-Carson girls matchups this season, you’ll be thrilled to know that Round 4 is upcoming on Monday at West.
West, 24-2 overall and 3-0 against Carson, is a No. 6 seed, while Carson (19-7) is a No. 11 seed.
All area teams are in the Midwest sectional of the West region. First-round games are Monday. Second-round games are scheduled for Wednesday, with the third round on Friday. Higher seeds always will play at home. Recommended starting time by the NCHSAA is 7 p.m., with 6:30 and 8 p.m. starts in case of girls/boys doubleheaders at one site.
In 1A, North Rowan’s boys (24-3) are aNo. 2 seed and will be at home against a familiar YVC opponent — South Stanly (8-16) — that they already have mashed 103-51 and 94-47.
North Rowan’s girls (12-11) are the No. 10 seed and will be on the road at No. 7 Bessemer City (10-14).
In 2A, Salisbury’s 15th-seeded boys also will play a conference foe in the first round. They’ll travel to No. 2 seed Central Davidson, the CCC regular-season and tournament champ. The Hornets (9-17) have lost 62-48 and 54-43 to Central (21-3).
In 3A, East Rowan’s girls (15-10) are a No. 14 seed and will play at SPC regular-season and tournament champ Concord Robinson (22-5), the No. 3 seed.
North Iredell’s girls (16-7) are seeded fifth and will play at home against No. 12 Anson (12-11).
A.L. Brown’s girls (9-15) are the No. 16 seed after losing a series of close games. They’ll be at the top-seeded Ledford Panthers (23-3).
West Rowan’s boys (12-13) are seeded 13th and will have a long trip to Waxhaw to play No. 4 Marvin Ridge (14-9).
Carson’s eighth-seeded boys (17-10) are at home against No. 9 seed Weddington (14-12).
A.L. Brown’s boys, a No. 11 seed at 19-7, will play at No. 6 North Forsyth (20-6).
Northwest Cabarrus’ boys (15-9) are seeded 14th and will play at No. 3 seed Statesville (20-3).
Central Cabarrus’ 16th-seeded boys (10-15) will play at No. 1 Concord (22-2).
SPC tourney champ Cox Mill (17-10) is seeded seventh and is home against No. 10 Berry (13-10).
In 4A, the Davie boys (20-5) are the No. 6 seed and will play at home against No. 11 East Forsyth (14-12).

Prep wrestling

Regionals to determine state qualifiers were held Friday and Saturday.
North Rowan wrestlers competed in the 1A East Regional in Princeton. Salisbury wrestlers competed in the 2A Midwest Regional at Piedmont.
Davie wrestlers competed in the 4A Midwest Regional at Kernersville Glenn, and NPC and SPC wrestlers were in the 3A Midwest Regional at Hickory Ridge.
Top four finishers in the regional advance to next weekend’s state tournament in Greensboro.
• In 1A, North Rowan had three regional champs and qualified eight for the state event.
Regional champs were Simon Connolly (106), Marc Gonzalez (113) and Damon Ellis (120).
Second-place finishers included Brandon Lemmon (145), Brandon Rabon (170), Cecil McCauley (220) and Will Robinson (285). Jaleel Hitchens was fourth at 132.
• East Rowan’s Wyatt Blume won the Midwest Regional championship at 145.
Blume had two pins and won 6-2 in the final against Hickory Ridge’s Joey McCracken.
East also qualified Logan Haas (third place, 106) and Jason Deutsch (third, 113) for the state event.
Haas had a long road back after losing in the first round, but he won five straight matches for third. Deutsch was 4-1.
• Carson’s Alex Lyles was regional champ at 220.
Lyles won twice by pins and twice by decision. He beat Ledford’s Guadalupe Cervantes 8-4 for the regional title.
Carson’s Brandon Sloop was a state qualifer. He was the regional runner-up at 160.
•South Rowan’s Logan Durham placed second at 106, while Tyler Hall was fourth at 124.
• West Rowan’s Walt Waggoner was third at 145.
Waggoner lost in the first round but reeled off a series of wins for third.
•A.L. Brown state qualifiers were Nico McClure (third, 285), Nicholas Sexton (fourth, 113) and Richard White (fourth, 120).
• In 2A, Salisbury’s Jeffrey Burton finished third at 195 to qualify for the state meet.
• In 4A, Davie had four qualifiers.
Jack Robertson (195), Alex Gobble (182) and Ryan Smith (126) were regional runners-up. Nathan Howard (170) placed third.

Catawba women

Catawba’s women’s basketball team continued its late charge by burying Newberry 64-42 with a tenacious defensive effort at Goodman Gym on Saturday.
Seniors Taylor May (South Rowan), Quaneasia Coleman and Elizabeth Merritt led the Indians (15-9, 11-5 SAC), who took over third place and secured a home game in the first round of the league tournament.
Coleman had a career game with 20 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists.
May had 18 points and nine rebounds and shot 7-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the foul line. Merritt scored 12 points. Antionette McPhail had nine rebounds.
Catawba held Newberry (18-8, 10-6) to 30-percent shooting and forced 23 turnovers.
Samantha Creed scored 13 for the Wolves.

Livingstone women

Livingstone’s women’s basketball team lost 75-63 to Winston-Salem State at Trent Gym on Saturday night.
Tiffany Evans led the Blue Bears (8-17, 4-12) with 19 points.
Kaylyn Chapman scored 12 points, while Jasmine Murray and Kendra McKinney had 10 each.
Taylar Wells led the Rams (14-12, 9-7) with 16 points.
• Murray was selected to the All-CIAA team. Murray averages 11.2 points per game.
She’ll be recognized at the league’s Tip-Off Awards Luncheon on Monday at the Charlotte Convention Center.

Women’s hoops

Pfeiffer’s Brittany Cox broke the school record with 41 points in a 111-48 romp against Converse on Saturday.
• Katelynne Poole (East Rowan) made a 3-pointer for Brevard on her only shot attempt in Saturday’s 80-67 SAC win against Wingate.

Livingstone men

Livingstone’s Mark Thomas was named to the All-CIAA team. Thomas leads the Blue Bears’ scoring at 18.1 ppg.

Catawba baseball

Catawba’s baseball team was beaten 7-5 by Newberry on Saturday.
Catawba (10-2, 2-2 SAC) fell behind 7-1 before trying to mount a comeback.
Catawba had only three hits off Newberry starter Alex Roberts, who fanned 10 in seven innings. The Indians made things interesting in the ninth, scoring four times and getting the tying run to the plate before Wesley Camp got the final out for the save.
Julio Zubillaga (Carson) had two hits and drove in a run for Catawba. Danny Parisi and Cam Cockman also drove in runs for the Indians.
Ace Nick Lomascolo took his first loss of the season. He allowed six runs (four earned) and nine hits in five innings.
The teams hope to complete their three-game series with a doubleheader today, starting at 1 p.m.

Britt, Litaker shine

Carson-Newman’s Alex Britt (Salisbury) shut out Brevard 2-0 in a SAC game played on Saturday.
It was the second straight complete game for Britt, a senior right-hander.
Britt struck out six, walked one and allowed five hits.
Britt’s effort in the nightcap gave the Eagles a split.
Brevard won the opener 2-1.

Alex Litaker (East Rowan) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for a save.

Local golf

In a rain-shortened eGolf Tour event held in Okatie, S.C., Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot 75-70-70 — 215. He tied for 21st and won $1,422.

Youth wrestling

East Rowan won the Rowan County Youth Wrestling League championship by beating Southeast.
East won its fifth title in six years. The team is coached by Lonnie Hinceman , Aaron Plyler, Justin Kepley, James Lovingood and Scott Lowry.
 East had Four wrestlers go undefeated — Gabe Hinceman, Isaac Hinceman, Sam Wall and Garrison Kepley.
The 8-year-old league includes teams from East, West, South, Southeast and Salisbury/North and features more than 200 participants.
Teams are divided into a K-3 grade division and a 4-6 grade division, along with weight classes.
The league annually hosts a Christmas tournament that brings in teams from around the region, and the league competes in the North Carolina Elementary State Duals.

Adult baseball league

The Rowan Adult Baseball League (RABL) is open to players 30 and over, plays on Sundays, starts in April and ends in September. Approximately 15 games, plus play offs. This is an affiliate of Men’s Adult Baseball League which is a national organization (MSBL).
