Catawba senior linebacker Cory Johnson was named Daktronics Super Region 2 Defensive Player of the Year
The team was announced on Thursday and is voted on by the Sports Information Directors of the region schools. Johnson was joined on the All-Super Region 2 First Team by senior cornerback Jumal Rolle.
Johnson set a school record with 138 tackles as a senior, posting a high of 20 in a game against Wingate. He also had a pair of 19-tackle efforts among his seven double-digit tackle performances. On the season, Johnson made five stops for losses, including a sack, and broke up three passes. He forced three fumbles and had one recovery.
Rolle, led the team and SAC with six interceptions on the year and finished his career with 16 to rank fifth all-time at Catawba. He broke up 10 other passes, forced a fumble and recovered two. Rolle also blocked four kicks on special teams.
Davie County freshman back Cade Carney was named co-offensive player of the year for the Central Piedmont Conference.
Carney shared the honor with Reagan’s Ja’Shawn Joyner.
Davie’s Devon Parks was named Special Teams Player of the Year.
Also making All-CPC from Davie were Kyle Bullins, Alex Gobble, Corey Gordy, Jamal Lackey, Caleb Mathis, Trip McNeil, Heath Nail, Garrett Nestor and Corvon Peebles.
North Davidson’s Mark Holcomb was named CPC Coach of the Year.
North Davidson’s Andrew Mayton was named CPC Defensive Player of the Year.
North Davidson’s Chase Mitchell and Spencer Landfried were named punter and kicker of the year for the CPC.
Jody Hill had 19 points, seven rebounds and five steals and led Livingstone to a 65-45 win against Claflin in Orangeburg, S.C., on Wednesday.
Cierra York’s 20 points and 10 rebounds led Livingstone to a 70-61 win against Claflin on Wednesday.
Catawba golf coach Sam Gealy, has announced a pair of early signings for the 2013-14 season.
Joining the women’s team will be Ali Lindo, of Hiawatha, IA, while John Petronis, of Northfield, NJ, will join the men’s team.
Lindo has been a three-time MVP at John F. Kennedy High. She has played in many local and Iowa state junior events.
Petronis plays at Mainland Regional High. He plays in many New Jersey junior events and has several seasons of JGA Tour experience.
Cole Honeycutt (East Rowan) will compete on Liberty’s track team. His first college indoor meet will be Saturday. Honeycutt will run the 800 meters. Honeycutt ran 1:56.53 in that event in high school and placed third in the 3A state championship meet.
The Salisbury High Athletic Boosters will meet on Monday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. in Room 105. Note the new location for this meeting. Basketball concession workers are needed.
North Hills hoops
The North Hills girls basketball team beat Cramerton 39-33. Abby Lane had 11 points and eight assists.
Natalie Whicker had 10 points and seven rebounds. Taylor Foster scored eight points and had three steals.
Southeast’s boys beat North Rowan Middle 40-37.
Lawrence Robinson scored 15 points for the Patriots. Brenden Westbrook scored 11, and Malon Herron had nine. Daniel Carlton was a defensive standout.
Joseph Scott had another big outing for the Mavericks with 22 points.
• Erwin’s girls held off China Grove 24-23.
Erwin (5-0) was led by Breya Philot with 19 rebounds, nine steals and six blocks.
Micah Furr and Ashlyn Mills scored five points each. Courtney Wagner grabbed seven rebounds.
China Grove (1-3) got nine points from Keara McClary and six from Madilyn Jones.
Erwin’s boys (4-1) beat China Grove 55-38 behind Lucas Morton’s 22 points and eight rebounds. Datavian Davis had 14 points and nine rebounds. Kameron Caldwell had eight rebounds, and Sean Perry had six. Tate Houpe scored five.
Dillon Norton scored 13 for the Red Devils (2-2). Walker Joyce had 11 points, and Cameron Corriher scored seven.
