ROCKWELL – Nazareth Children’s Home has received a $50,000 grant from the Cannon Foundation to help build a new transitional living home for young women on its campus in Rockwell.
Nazareth will be replacing an inadequate building, not creating a new program, said Vernon L. Walters Jr., Nazareth’s longtime president and chief executive officer.
“It’s highly important to our board and staff that our children’s facilities are up-to-date, adequate and meet all of their needs, and the cottage we are replacing just doesn’t do that,” Walters said. “We have high standards at Nazareth, and we want the best for our children.”
The current cottage in use was built in the early 1950s to house the superintendant, who lived on campus in those days.
The total cost of the new construction project is estimated to be $475,000. The new cottage will be occupied by six female residents and two adult staff members.
“It’s great to have partners like the Cannon Foundation, who are dedicated to improving the lives of the disadvantaged in North Carolina,” said Josh Regan, director of development at Nazareth. “It’s amazing to see all of the good that has come from this foundation, which Mr. Cannon started in 1943, and I’m grateful that they believe in what we’re doing at Nazareth.”
To date, Nazareth has secured $428,000 for the project from three local foundations, its own board and one anonymous donor, and it will begin construction once the goal is met. For more information, contact Regan at 704-279-5556 or jregan@nazch.com.
