Friday Football Fever: East Rowan at Concord preview
Published 12:00 am Friday, August 24, 2012
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Records: East 1-0; Concord 1-0
Series: Concord leads 34-3-1.
East did win recently, pummeling the Spiders 30-0 in 2009 at home behind QB Jamey Blalock. That was in the third game of the season before freshman B.J. Beecher had taken over as Concord’s quarterback.
East’s other two wins over the Spiders are well-remembered. East won 7-6 in 1979 and famously won 23-22 over a powerful Concord team in the 1969 WNCHSAA playoffs. That was the year East went 13-0.
Last meeting: The Spiders led 28-0 after a quarter and by 41-0 at halftime and romped 58-0 in Granite Quarry in 2011.
Last week: East surprised Salisbury 20-14. Concord demolished West Charlotte 62-35 as Beecher tossed seven TD passes and threw for 454 yards. Concord led 62-14 at one point, so the Spiders’ first-string defense was better than the score sounds.
Next week: East visits North Rowan. Concord is at home against Monroe
Game notes: Concord has progressed steadily under coach Glen Padgett and won 10 games in 2011.
The 6-foot-7 Beecher threw 36 TD passes in 2011 and has thrown for 84 scores in his career. He has most of his receiving corps back from 2011 — Alex Asbury, Zosh Heilig, Brayvon Howard and tight end Parker Swaringen.
East is opening the season with three straight road games, although that was no handicap last week.
East showed a balanced offense in upsetting Salisbury in coach Danny Misenheimer’s debut. The East bent but didn’t break and Donte Means and Dustin Mowery came up with turnovers.
Concord has won 27 of the last 28 meetings, so the Mustangs have nothing to lose. — M. London
