Area sports briefs: Scrimmages tonight

North Rowan, South Rowan and East Rowan will be involved in the Cabarrus-Rowan Border Battle at Concord High football scrimmage tonight. North battles Mount Pleasant at 6 p.m. East tangles with Northwest Cabarrus at 7 p.m. South faces Concord at 8 p.m.
West Rowan scrimmages at Thomasville at 6 p.m. tonight.
On Saturday night, East and Carson will participate in the North Stanly Jamboree. East Montgomery and Parkwood also are involved.
A.L. Brown’s Wonder Day and Green-White scrimmage are today.
Davie scrimmages at Mooresville tonight.
The Post’s annual football edition will be available on Aug. 15.
American Legion
North Carolina champ Wilmington Post 10 beat Rockdale, Ga., 9-8 in the first round of the Southeast Regional Tournament being held at Riley Park in Sumter, S.C.
Chance Shepard, who will be a freshman at N.C. State, had a two-run homer in the fifth, a two-run double in the eighth and a walkoff, two-run single in the ninth to carry Wilmington to a comeback victory.
Also in the first round of the double-elimination event, Lynchburg, Va., topped Shelbyville, Ky. 3-2 and S.C. champ Florence buried Tuscaloosa, Ala. 16-4. Host Sumter thrashed Ft. Pierce, Fla., 11-1 in the nightcap.
Wilmington plays Sumter in tonight’s finale. Florence takes on Lynchburg in the other winner’s bracket contest.
Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 2-1 at Lakewood on Thursday.
The game marked Lakewood’s 10th sellout of the season, and Alejandro Villalobos’ two-run double was all Lakewood needed to send 8,000 fans home happy.
The teams play again tonight in New Jersey.
Rudy Brown (South Rowan) pitched two scoreless innings for Kane County in a 2-1 loss to Clinton on Thursday in the Midwest League. Brown’s ERA fell to 2.15.
Daniel Wagner (South) had a hit and scored a run in Winston-Salem’s 9-2 win against Wilmington on Thursday in the Carolina League.
Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) drove in two runs and stole a base for Ogden in a late game on Thursday.
Keegan Linza (North Rowan) pitched six innings for Great Falls late Thursday night against Billings. Linza allowed six hits and five runs (two earned). His ERA is 4.83.
Prep tennis
Salisbury’s girls tennis team won an exhibition match at Mt. Airy on Thursday against the defending 1A state champs.
Salisbury is scheduled to play Monday at home against South Rowan to officially open the season.
Local golf
In the Dogwood State Junior Girls Championship at Starmount Country Club in Greensboro, Salisbury graduate Lily Yatawara shot 76-79-79 — 234 for 10th place.
Isabella Rusher, who will be a sophomore at Salisbury, shot 75-81-87 — 243 and finished 18th.
In the Dogwood State Junior Boys Championship, Eric Edwards, who will be a senior at Salisbury, shot 71-71-67 — 209 and tied for ninth.
Salisbury graduate Troy Beaver shot 69-73-71 — 213 and tied for 16th.
In the eGolf Tour’s Grand Harbor Open in South Carolina, Frank Adams III and Will Collins made the cut. The two-round cutline fell at 5-under 139.
Adams shot 71-66 —137. Collins shot 71-68 — 139.
In the final Junior Mac Summer Series Tournament at McCanless on Thursday, Ben Childress shot 46 to win the 9-under division. Luke Graeber was second at 56. Alexis Miller shot 58 for third.
Nick Lyerly’s 34 paced the 10-13 division. Michael Childress was second at 36, and Alex Miller was third at 50.
In the 14-17 division, Logan Shuping won with a 36. Jacob Durham shot 47 for second. Ben Rollins was third at 50.
Longest drive winners were Ben Childress, Michael Childress and Shuping.
The 34th Cardinal Amateur starts today in Greensboro.
The Country Club of Salisbury women’s Net Point Tournament was won by Patti Mason. Pat Cooke finished second.
Martial arts
Members of Sidekick Karate in China Grove have competed in three state Qualifiers and the National Karate Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Also, the team has trained with several national team coaches and members.
In four days of competition in Ft. Lauderdale, Sidekick’s 18 athletes from ages 6-47 won seven gold medals, seven silver and 13 bronze.
Kubodo (weapons), Kata (forms), and Kumite (sparring) were the events they competed in.
Sidney Hare (6) won bronze in Kubodo and Kumite. Julianne Taylor (8) won bronze in Kubodo and Kata and silver in Kumite. Kayleigh Hare (11) won silver in Kata and Kumite. Connor Kuehl won silver in Kubodo. Michael Sullivan (13) won silver in Kumite. Mackenzie Casper (13) won gold in Kubodo and bronze in Kata and Kumite. Dylan Smith (14) won gold in Kubodo. Jonathan Childers (17) won gold in Kubodo, silver in Kumite and bronze in Kata. Briana Weaver (17) won bronze in Kubodo. Aimee Patterson (21) won bronze in Kubodo, Kata and Kumite. David Childers (26) won gold in Kubodo and bronze in Kumite. Carrie Taylor (33) won gold in Kubodo and Kata and silver in Kumite. Robert Taylor (47) won gold in Kata and bronze in Kubodo.
Also competing from Sidekick were Caleb Casper (6), Invictus Collins (10), Andrew Hare (10), Jacob Taylor (11) and Kaleb Isenhour (12).
Funds were raised to cover lodging and team jackets through a Pancake breakfast at Applebee’s in Salisbury, and selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts and raffle tickets.
Karate could become an Olympic sport in Tokyo in 2020.
One of eight sports — squash, baseball, softball, wushu, roller sports, sports climbing, wakeboarding or karate — will be added.

Salisbury Parks and Recreation Point Guard Elite Camp for ages 7-17 will be held on Aug. 13-15 from 9 until noon at Hall Gym.
