Area sports briefs: Elliot Gealy to coach Pfeiffer

Elliot Gealy has been hired as men’s and women’s golf coach at Pfeiffer.
Pfeiffer director of athletics Mary Ann Sunbury made the announcement.
“I am thankful for the opportunity to lead a great group of men and women,” Gealy said. “Pfeiffer is the perfect place for me to start my college coaching career.”
The former Salisbury High and Clemson standout brings over a dozen years of professional golf experience to Pfeiffer, including a trip to the PGA Tour’s 2011 U.S. Open held at Congressional Country Club.
Gealy has participated in hundreds of golf tournament around the world, including local tours such as Tear Drop and Tar Heel, as well as regional and national circuits such as Hooters, Nationwide and PGA.
Gealy also has been a golf instructor at venues from Florida to South Korea.
“We are thrilled to have Coach Gealy join our staff,” Sunbury said. “Elliot is going to be a great source of inspiration while bringing invaluable experience for our players. He brings a lot of enthusiasm and knowledge to this position and we’re looking forward to having him here at Pfeiffer.”
Gealy’s father is Rowan County Hall of Famer and Catawba golf coach Sam Gealy.
In the eGolf Tour’s Southern Open, Michael Sims shot a tour-record 59 at the Country Club of Salisbury on Thursday. He birdied the first eight holes and had a 27 on the front nine. Sims He finished his round with 12 birdies. His longest birdie was with a pitching wedge from 22 feet on No. 16.
Drew Weaver still leads the tournament, which is also being contested at the Club at Irish Creek, after two rounds. Weaver shot 62 and 67.
Frank Adams III has shot 69-69 — 138, while Will Collins has shot 70-68 — 138. They’re part of a tie for 49th at 4-under.n The Toshiba North Carolina Open will be played at the Club at Irish Creek on July 24-26.
Tournament director Cory Armstrong is anticipating a great event.
“We expect a full field of some of the top-playing PGA professional and amateur golfers in the Carolinas,” he said.
In a Junior Mac 9-hole summer tournament held Thursday at McCanless results were:
Alexis Miller won the 9-under division.
Nick Lyerly shot 36 to win the 10-13 division, with Alex Miller second.
Jacob Durham’s 45 paced the 14-17 division. Mason Basinger was second.
Grace Stokes won the 14-17 girls division, with Kathryn Marcum second. Longest drive winners were Lyerly and Stokes.
The next Junior Mac will be July 26 at 2 p.m.
The Corbin Hills Ladies held their annual Member-Guest Tournament.
The winning net team was Bev Cobb and Yvonne Barger.
The second net team was Toni Iossi and Sandy Teubner, the third net team was Carolynn Ries and Jessie McFeeley, and the fourth net team was Treva Honeycutt and Carol Cain.
First gross was won by the team of Kristi Laton and Lisa Sepesi, followed by the team of Susan Morris and Becky Isenhour.
The Corbin Hills Ladies played a Captain’s Choice event.
The winning team was Laton, Shirley Baucom and Faye Cline.
The second-place team was Phyllis Durland, Cindy Carmazzi and Ries, and the third-place team was Honeycutt, Karla Swanson, and Eileen Full.
American Legion
An early homer by Sam Laws started Statesville on the way to a 9-6 win against the Mooresville Moors on Thursday.
Seventh-seeded Statesville won the series three games to one and will play the higher-seeded Northern Division team in the third round.
Michael Elwell hit a homer for the Moors.
Mocksville’s versatile infielder Jacob Walker, a .300-hitter, will miss the rest of the Rowan series. Walker is out of state for a wedding.
Ethan Free is the probable pitcher for Rowan County tonight at Newman Park.
Mocksville’s pitcher tonight won’t be Ryan Foster. If the series goes to a fifth game at Rich Park on Saturday, Foster would get the call.
Junior Legion
Rowan County’s Junior Legion team lost 4-3 to the Lake Norman-based Mooresville Moors on Thursday.
Rowan trails 2-1 in the best-of-five series. Rowan will play at Staton Field tonight at 7 p.m.
Local track
Add Tamia Brown to the list of Salisbury Speedsters who have qualified for AAU Juniors Nationals Track and Field in Texas.
Prep basketball
North Rowan graduate Pierre Givens has been added to the West roster for next week’s East-West All-Star Game In Greensboro.
Givens, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 11.6 points per game as a senior and 8.8 as a junior when he helped North win the 1A state championship.
Givens joins West Rowan’s Keshun Sherrill on the West team.
West Rowan’s Mike Gurley is the West team’s assistant coach.
Opposing guards for the East will include Catawba signee Elon Edwards (Greenville Rose).
An East-West preview is upcoming.
South football seats
It’s again time for the sale of reserved seats at South Rowan High School for the Raider Football Season.
Tickets will go on sale to current season ticket holders from Monday, July 16 until Tuesday, July 31.
Remaining seats will go on sale to the general public beginning Wednesday, Aug. 1.
This year there are five regular- season home games included in the $35 price.
Tickets may be purchased in the main office of the school, Monday through Thursday from 8-12 or 1-3:30.
