KANNAPOLIS — Incumbents Doris Buchanan and Charles Mitchell edged out newcomer Dianne Berry to solidify their fourth consecutive terms on the Kannapolis City school system’s Board of Education.
The pair will represent Cabarrus County on the board.
Todd Adams, who was running unopposed for the sole Rowan County seat on the board, will return for a second term.
Buchanan was the top vote-getter with 2,735 votes, nearly 39 percent of the vote. Mitchell followed closely behind with 2,277 votes, 33 percent. Berry received 28 percent with 1,969 votes.
“I feel very honored by the confidence the people have expressed in me by re-electing me,” Buchanan said. “I just pledge to do the very best I can do to fulfill their trust and work to provide the very best education for our students.”
Mitchell said he’s excited to have the entire board back together.
“Our synergy is just tremendous,” he said. “We’re working very diligently together to try to get all of our students to graduate, and we’re working very hard to reduce the number of dropouts.”
Berry wished her opponents the “very best,” Tuesday evening.
“Thank you to the voters of Kannapolis who supported me in this campaign,” she said. “Although I really wanted this opportunity to utilize my experience, I know that Doris Buchanan and Charles Mitchell are both experienced and qualified leaders who will continue to serve Kannapolis City Schools well.”
