SPENCER — Four years of YVC domination came to a close for North Rowan’s Teaunna Cuthbertson Thursday.
The Cavalier senior won the 100-meter hurdles along with the long jump and triple jump for the fourth year in a row and keyed another conference title for North.
“I feel really good about it,” Cuthbertson said. “Track is something that I’m really dedicated to. When I come out here, it’s really no playing games.”
No one in the conference would argue that about any of the Cavaliers. North finished with 151 points, easily enough to edge Gray Stone, which had 104. North Moore (83), Chatham Central (51) and Albemarle (47) rounded out the top five.
Cuthbertson ran the 100 hurdles in 15.29 seconds, an average day for the St. Augustine’s signee. The long jump featured a 16-foot, 6-inch leap and she went 35 feet, 5 inches in the triple jump to best teammate Aleeyah Johnakin. It was just another day at the office for the year-round track star who’s battled a leg injury throughout the last year.
“I feel like I did a lot better in the hurdles then what I’ve done all season,” Cuthbertson said. “At the same time, I could have done better. I’ve come a long way since my surgery.”
The Cavs dominated the field events, with Sabrina Vann winning the discus with a 106-8 throw and Amber Carter winning the shot put (30-2). Vann was second in the shot put and the high jump. North’s Alexis Mitchell was fourth in the high jump.
“A lot of the young girls really got after it,” Steele said. “They earned their Cavalier stripes today and you could see that.”
Sachai Hicks and Tenesha Dickerson finished 4-5 for the Cavs in the 400. Aniyah Johnson was second in the 300 hurdles.
Latesha Surles won the 200 in 26.15 seconds, with Dickerson placing third. Surles was second in the 100.
“Teaunna had a great day in the long and triple jumps,” Steele said. “Sabrina had a great day in the shot and discus. It was a great effort all around.”
Gray Stone controlled the distance events as the Knights finished 1-2 in the 800 and 3200 and carried the top three in the 1600.
Hunter Latimer won the 800 and 1600 for the Knights.
