GOLD HILL — A dozen goats are dead and 16 others are injured after two Rottweilers got into their pen at 150 Bald Eagle Lane and attacked Wednesday morning.
Three of the goats were already dead when the veterinarian arrived, nine others had to be euthanized.
Owner Ray Fesperman said it’s the second attack in a year. One goat was killed during that incident.
Fesperman’s daughter, Melody Hartman, said the vet gave the 16 surviving goats a tetanus shot and antibiotics.
Each day, Hartman spends about two hours irrigating the puncture wounds, applying a the topical antibiotic betadine and giving them iron for the inflammation and swelling.
Fesperman said the goats were mostly pets, but he sold some of the males to make extra money.
“I’ve had back problems, a stroke, colon cancer, everything you can think of so I can’t do much,” he said. “I just like to come out here and sit with my goats.”
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office has charged the owner of the dog, Daniel Kesler, 22, of 255 Recreation Drive in Salisbury, with allowing animals to run at large.
