LANDIS — Investigators from the Landis Police Department joined Time Warner Cable officials to identify and prosecute a man for making illegal cable connections.
Early this week, the Landis Police Department received a tip that a resident of North Kimmons Street had paid a man $60 to illegally connect cable to the residence. Investigators notified Time Warner Cable officials, who verified that the residence had been connected illegally.
Investigators made contact with the resident, who confirmed paying $60 to Benji Boe Hamby, 43, of 6597 Wright Ave., Kannapolis, to connect the cable service in January.
Investigators discovered that Hamby’s residence had also been connected to Time Warner’s system illegally.
With assistance from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, Landis Police investigators executed a search warrant on Hamby’s residence and recovered proprietary tools designed to remove security terminators from cable television equipment.
Hamby told investigators he had previously been employed by 180 Connect, a private company that performs subcontract work for cable and satellite television companies.
Hamby was arrested and charged with obtaining property by false pretenses and theft of cable TV service. He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $1,500 secured bond.
