Area sports briefs: North ranked third

In the NCPreps.com media poll released on Tuesday, Winston-Salem Prep (1A), Waxhaw Cuthbertson (2A), Chapel Hill (3A) and Charlotte Olympic (4A) were picked as the top teams in the state.
North Rowan, which got five of the 11 first-place votes, is ranked third in 1A, with South Davidson ranked ninth.
Concord was ranked second in 3A.
• In the girls ranks, Bishop McGuinness (1A), Salisbury (2A), Hickory (3A) and Myers Park (4A) are ranked No. 1.
Carson’s girls are ranked fourth in 3A. North Stanly’s girls are ranked seventh in 2A.
• North Hills’ girls won 51-46 against Davidson Day Tuesday. Abby Lane led North Hills in scoring with 19 points. C.C. Lyerly added 14 points.
College hoops
Catawba travels to Wingate tonight for a SAC game at 8 p.m. Catawba sits at 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Middle school
West Rowan’s boys basketball team beat North Rowan 38-31 to improve to 10-1 on the year.
Kreshon Alexander scored 13 points for West while Dearius Williams scored 10 and blocked three shots. Naquis Caldwell led North with 11 points, followed by Josh Handy with 10.
West faces Erwin Monday.
• The China Grove boys won their third in a row by beating Southeast 58-40 Tuesday. Michael Morrison led China Grove with 18 points. Southeast got 20 points from John Yang, who hit six 3-pointers. Alex Yang had 10 points for Southeast.
• Knox’s boys beat Mooresville 69-39.
Jalen Sanders had 20 points and five assists. Joseph (Snoop) Alexander came off the bench on fire. He was 5-for-6 on 3-pointers for 13 points.
Deshawn Troutman had 14 points. Donnell Alexander had 12, and Corban Usry had 10.
Local golf
Will Collins and Roy Dixon of Salisbury finished up the Carolinas Young Amateur Tuesday at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst.
Collins shot a 77 for a two-day total of 152, good enough to tie for ninth place. Dixon, a freshman at UNC Greensboro, shot an 80 for a 157 total to tie for 23rd.
Softball tryouts
The Carolina Comets 8-Under team is based in Mooresville and is holding tryouts on Jan. 21 and Jan. 28 from 11-1 at Lake Norman High.
The Carolina Comets have teams ranging from 8U to 18U and have won championships at every level.

Tusculum has named Mike Iezzi defensive coordinator.
Umpire clinic
The National Softball Association will hold an umpire clinic at the Salisbury Civic Center on Sunday, Jan. 22 for slow pitch officials.
Registration will begin at 10 a.m. with the clinic lasting until 2 p.m.
The fee is $55.
Those interested in umpiring any league or tournament play should attend. Rules and mechanics will be taught by Eastern Zone Umpire-In-Chief Mike Snyder.
