Area Sports Briefs: updates, corrects North girls box

North Rowan’s Will Robertson made the All-YVC football team as both an offensive and defensive lineman.
Tight end Tydler Watlington and defensive back Jalen Cook also made All-YVC.
West Montgomery QB Jaquil Capel was player of the year. Albemarle’s Danny Akins was named YVC Coach of the Year.
n All-YVC teams
North Rowan’s Neegbeah Reeves was runner-up for runner of the year honors in the conference. Chatham Central’s Chris Jaeger was runner of the year.
Gray Stone’s Quintin Parsons Zack Medlin and Reid Huckabee made the All-YVC team.
n Gray Stone’s Illa Jones was runner-up for runner of the year honors in the YVC. Chatham Central’s Holly Gaines was runner of the year.
Gray Stone’s Janna Featherstone, Hunter Latimer, Rebecca Brickner and Jennie Wagner made All-YVC.
n North Rowan’s David Huerta made the All-YVC soccer team. Gray Stone was represented by Logan Hill, John Latimer, Ian Lins and Sandi Jusic.
East Montgomery’s Daniel Paz was player of the year.
n Gray Stone’s Brooke Herlocker, Caby Styers, Meghan Hedgpeth and Jordan DeJaco made the All-YVC tennis team.
Herlocker was runner-up for player of the year, and Gray Stone’s Jeff Walters was runner-up for coach of the year.
East Montgomery’s Delana Hinson was player of the year.
n Gray Stone’s Victoria Sandy and Karlen Lambert were named to the All-YVC volleyball team.
Albemarle’s Gabrielle Lowder was player of the year.
Albemarle’s Joanne McConlogue was coach of the year, with Gray Stone’s Sheri Efird runner-up.
n All-SPC football
A.L. Brown’s Mike Newsome was named SPC Coach of the year for football, and A.L. Brown safety Kaleel Hollis was named the league’s defensive player of the year.
The league’s co-offensive players of the year were A.L. Brown’s Kalif Phillips and Concord quarterback B.J. Beecher.
Also making All-SPC from Brown were QB Brandon Eppinger, running back Damien Washington, offensive lineman Phillip Halstenburg, receiver Keeon Johnson, defensive linemen Gerald Holt, Jericho Rivers and Darius Rice, linebacker John Bass and cornerback Jamar Clemons.
Northwest Cabarrus players on All-SPC were Bradley Pinion, Will England, Weston Smith, John Edmond, Jalen Caldwell, E.J. Rhinehart and Jarrin Hogue. Pinion was the league’s special teams player of the year.
n All-SPC teams
A.L. Brown’s Brian Landis was named SPC Coach of the Year for boys cross country.
A.L. Brown’s Jose Navarette, Timmy Hall, Max Chandler and Mason Forrest made All-SPC.
Northwest Cabarrus’ Gil Gilreath and Sebastian Yow were All-SPC.
n A.L. Brown girls making the All-SPC team were Natalie Tresslar, Erika Neese and Briana Landis. Northwest’s Emma Hand made All-SPC.
n A.L. Brown’s Jalen Jackson, Fernando Guerrero and Houa Yang made the All-SPC boys soccer team.
Northwest’s Nick Kay was named SPC Player of the Year. Northwest’s Kevin Esparza and Chris Freeman also made All-SPC.
n A.L. Brown’s Becky Shopf was named coach of the year for SPC girls tennis.
Caroline Doby represented the Wonders on the All-SPC team. Northwest’s Vicki DiRenzi and Caroline Blackman made All-SPC.
n Prep hoops
The North Rowan vs. Salisbury varsity basketball doubleheaders this season will be played at Catawba’s Goodman Gym on Saturday, Dec. 10, and Saturday, Dec. 17.
Catawba’s men’s team plays Limestone at home this Saturday at 4 p.m., so the North-Salisbury girls game should get under way at about 6:30 p.m.
• MOORESVILLE — John Davis keeps talking about Groundhog Day for his South Rowan boys.
South, which was shooting 49 percent from the free-throw line coming in, was just 8 for 20 from the foul line and fell to Mooresville 67-49 Tuesday.
The bright spot for the Raiders (0-5) was sophomore Shaw Spry, who scored all 16 of his points in the second half, 11 in the fourth period.

• MT. GILEAD — North Rowan’s boys rolled in a 68-36 triumph at West Montgomery.
Jordan Kimber had a game-high 19 points and North jumped out to a 20-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
“We played with a lot of intensity,” North coach Andrew Mitchell said. “We were very aggressive and the effort was there.”
North (2-0, 2-0) got a big night on the glass from Malik Ford (14 rebounds) and a 10-point effort from Mike Connor.

• MT. GILEAD — North Rowan’s girls couldn’t convert on a possession in the final seconds in a 48-46 loss to West Montgomery in a YVC matchup Tuesday.
“I liked our effort,” North coach Tony Hillian said. “We just need to hit our free throws and our layups.”
Teaunna Cuthbertson had 11 points to lead the Cavaliers (1-1). North struggled at the foul line, going 9 for 21.

The North Rowan Cavaliers beat the West Rowan Falcons 38-20 in the 5th-6th grade Super Bowl at South Rowan.
Jaden Jones rushed for 242 yards and scored four touchdowns for the Cavs on runs of 58, 43, 35, and 91 yards.
Xavier Haley scored twice for North on runs of 38 and 40 yards.
Defensive standouts for the Cavs were Haley, Jones, Michael White, Brett Lawson, Laverrick Johnniken, Cameron Gill and Tyrus Neely.
The Cavaliers were piloted by head coach Kent Ryan, Ernest Dunlap, Kenderic Dunlap, Carl Marlin, Jermaine Miller, Dennis Rivers, Dwayne Lawson, Mike White and Tim Handy.
Bryant Young threw two TD passes for the Falcons. Brandon Wallace scored the other West TD.
n Women’s hoops
Appalachian State junior Anna Freeman (East Davidson) was named Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Freeman scored 25 points in a 64-45 win over Georgia Southern in the SoCon opener. She leads the SoCon in blocks and steals and is second in scoring at 15.7 points per game.
n Pfeiffer’s Jodie Lemons has been selected as the Conference Carolinas player of the week.
n Jayvee hoops
East Rowan’s girls topped Salisbury 43-21 on Monday.
Kaleigh Troutman had 10 points, nine steals and seven rebounds for the Mustangs (4-0). Shelby Benge had points and 11 rebounds. Amani Ajayi and Erin Hatley scored six points each, while Lara Drew had six assists.
Katie Wolfe scored eight for the Hornets.
East plays at North Stanly on Wednesday.
• Carson’s girls (3-1) rallied from a 14-point deficit on Tuesday to beat A.L. Brown.
Leading the Cougars were Megan Gray with 12 points and Katie Barringer with 11. Chrishona Roberson and Jordy Clark each scored six.
• Davie County’s girls beat West Rowan in the season opener 58-33.
West was led by Anna Edwards with 10, Hallie Talbert with six.
n 8th-grade hoops

Southeast 33, Corriher-Lipe 22
Taylor Martin led the Patriots with 17 points. Shanice Miller had 8 points and Addison Collins had 6.
Southeast(2-3) plays host to Knox today.
n Sacred Heart hoops
The Sacred Heart jayvee boys beat Hickory Christian 37-25.
Sacred Heart (5-1) was led by Alex Antosek with 12 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Will Taylor added 10 points and three steals.
n Middle school wrestling
Southeast beat Corriher-Lipe 78-16 on Monday. See Scoreboard.
n North Hills hoops
The North Hills varsity girls basketball team lost to Statesville Christian 51-40. Abby Lane led North Hills with 11 points, while C.C. Lyerly and Natalie Whicker scored 10 each.
n The North Hills Elementary boys team defeated Phoenix Montessori 47-15. James Houghton scored 25 points for the Eagles, and Marshawn Hargrove added 16. The Eagles (3-1) will host Statesville Montessori on Friday.
