Area sports briefs: Statesville wins match

Statesville won this week’s NPC match held at Twin Oaks.
The Greyhounds shot 146 to top East Rowan (153), West Rowan (161), North Iredell (169) and South Rowan (174).
East scorers were Amy Carlton (50), Grace Stokes (51), Kathryn Marcum (52) and Tabitha Warren (52).
West scorers were Kayla Boley (50), Kelly Boley (52) and Kristen Boley (59).
South scorers were Alex Bare (54), Maren Lewallen (60) and Kaila Deitz (60).
Middle schools
Softball
Erwin rolled to a 15-0 win against Knox.
Meagan Kepley and Taylor Merritt had hits for the Eagles (6-1), and they took advantage of eight walks.
Casey Ward and Micah Furr pitched well. Alyssa Potts and Lauren Wilsey made great defensive plays.
Tennis
Knox lost to Erwin’s girls 5-4 on Tuesday.
Singles winners for Knox were Kathryn Rusher and Lainey Slate.
Doubles winners were Rusher-Slate, and Zeenat Sabakada-Ellie Brown.
Football
Knox beat West Rowan 24-18 on Tuesday.
Javon Quarles led the Bulldog with touchdown runs of 55 and 30 yards. He had 127 yards rushing and 20 yards receiving.
Kortez Weeks added the other TD on a 2-yard burst.
Standouts included Jacob Morris, Jason Johnson, Armoni Hogue, Zach Mangum and Rodney Howell.
Hunter Brown and Avery Allen made fumble recoveries for the Bulldogs.
West plays at Southeast next Tuesday.
China Grove’s 7th-graders fell to Erwin 16-8.
Isaac Bell scored on a 5-yard QB keeper to cap a 16- play scoring drive for the Red Devils, and Cole Howard kicked the PAT, worth two points.
Defensive standouts for China Grove were Austin Chrismon and Malik Vickers.
Jayvee football
Salisbury will play at Carson at 6 p.m. tonight in a jayvee football game.
South Rowan is at West Rowan, East Rowan is at West Iredell, East Montgomery is at North Rowan and A.L. Brown is at Central Cabarrus.
Davie doesn’t play. Friday’s game at Hibriten is the War Eagles’ endowment game.
Prep volleyball
Undefeated North Iredell (11-0, 6-0) is in control of the NPC race after sweeping a match with second-place West Iredell and beating third-place Carson 3-1.
When NI dropped a game to Carson (12-3, 4-2) Tuesday, it marked the first time it hadn’t swept its opponent since Aug. 16.
The Cougars bounced back to beat Hickory Ridge 25-15, 25-21, 25-18 on Wednesday.
Carson plays at East Rowan in an NPC matchup today. Carson’s jayvees topped Hickory Ridge 25-12, 25-15.
