Couple accused of swapping seats in traffic stop

CLEVELAND ó A Monroe couple were arrested Saturday during a license checkpoint after the driver tried to evade authorities, the Rowan County Sheriffís Office said.
Lindsay Danielle Benfield, 20, of 3420 Griffith Road, and Shane Michael Pack, 24, of the same address, were on N.C. 801 near the intersection of old U.S. 70, when they were stopped.
Deputy M.A. Dixon stopped the 2003 Mitsubishi around 2:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the American Legion.
ěShe admitted to turning into the parking lot of the American Legion to avoid our checkpoint and switched driving positions. She also admitted to consuming alcohol,î the deputyís report said.
Her blood alcohol count was .07, which is below the .08 legal limit, but Benfield is under the age of legal alcohol consumption.
Benfield was charged with driving after consuming by person under 21 and driving while license revoked. She was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $1,500 bond.
Packís blood-alcohol content was 0.11 and he was charged with driving while impaired. He was placed in the county jail under a $500 bond.
Both have since been released. They are scheduled to appear in court Sept. 9.
