Staff report
The Rowan County Legion baseball team is in a familiar setting: the state tournament.
Whether Jim Gantt’s team has some morning glory left will decided quickly as Rowan (23-8) opens the tournament in Morehead City today at 10 a.m.
Its foe is Wayne County (25-5), the same team Rowan battled in 2002, 2007 and 2008.
Rowan comes in on a two-game losing streak, falling in the Area III championship series to High Point.
It will be up to Thomas Allen to bring Rowan back. He has the best record on the team (6-0) and the second-best ERA (2.72).
If Rowan wins this morning, it will face the Hickory-Wilmington winner at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. If Rowan loses, it will have another 10 a.m. start.
The tournament is scheduled to end on Tuesday. If Rowan advances, it would go the Southeast Regional in Sumter, S.C. Aug. 4-8.
