Area sports briefs: Parnell brings heat

New York Mets reliever Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) certainly appears to be back to 100 percent physically.
Half of Parnellís 14 pitches in Wednesdayís game against the Detroit Tigers were clocked at more than 100 mph, and the swiftest registered 103 mph on the radar gun at Comerica Park.
n Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators scored five runs in the eighth inning and rallied to beat Hickory 6-5 on Thursday.
Miguel Gonzalez had two RBIs for Kannapolis.
n Tacomaís Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) hit a three-run homer in the second inning of a late Thursday game against the Fresno Grizzlies.
n Albuquerqueís Jerry Sands (Catawba) collected a double and two singles, but the Isotopes lost an 18-13 slugfest to Omaha on Thursday.
n Southpaw Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) remains on the disabled list with the Double A New Britain Rock Cats.
n Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) walked three times and stole his 10th base for Hagerstown in an 8-4 win against Lakewood on Thursday.
n Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) picked up his seventh double of the season in Winston-Salemís 4-2 loss to Potomac on Thursday.
n Keegan Linza (North Rowan) was sharp out of the bullpen for Bristol in a 10-6 Appy League win against Burlington on Thursday. Linza pitched a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts. His ERA is still 0.00.
n American Legion
Thereís a huge game at Newman Park tonight, with Rowan playing host to the Mooresville Moors.
The game was originally scheduled to be played at Lake Norman High, but it was moved to Newman Park by mutual agreement.Technically, this will be a home game for the Moors.
Rowan is 11-4 in the Southern Division of Area III, with three games left in the regular season. The Moors are 10-5. Mocksville (10-4) and Wilkes (8-5) also are still in the chase for first place.
The Moors beat Rowan 5-1 in the teamsí first meeting behind hurler Joey McAlpin.
Hotdogs will be on sale for $1 for the first two innings as a thank you to the fans.
n Kannapolis fell 7-5 to the Mooresville Legends on Thursday despite jumping to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Evan Holub had an early two-run single, but Mooresville reliever Devin Bagwell stranded runners at second and third to escape a potential big inning. Kannapolisí Josh Martin hit a long foul drive down the left-field line that was nearly a three-run homer. Bagwell then struck him out on a 3-2 pitch.
Kannapolis is at South Rowan tonight.
n Indy leagues
In the independent American Association, David Thomas (Catawba) came out of a 2-for-26 slump with two hits on Thursday and helped Grand Prairie beat Shreveport 3-1.
n Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) has dropped his last three decisions for Fargo-Moorhead in the American Association and is 3-5 in nine starts.
n Wood bat leagues
Working out of the bullpen for the Wilmington Sharks, Chris Dula (Catawba) has struck out 15 batters in 111/3 innings.
n Carson camps
The 5th annual Carson Basketball Camp for rising 2nd-6th graders will be held July 11-14 from 9-12.
Cost is $60 and includes instruction, camp T-shirt and camp insurance. Contact boys basketball coach Brian Perry at 704-855-5039.
n The Carson girls basketball program will be hosting two camps this month. The elementary school girls camp for rising kindergarten through fifth- graders will be held July 5-7 from 9 until noon. Cost is $40.
The middle school girls camp for rising 6th-8th graders will be held July 11-14 from 4:30-7:30. Cost is $50.

n ER Diamond Sports
East Rowan Diamond Sports is hosting the 8U Area 4 Cal Ripken baseball tournament for western North Carolina all-star teams.
The double-elimination tournament is being played at Granite Quarryís Mathis Field and Faith Field.
East Rowan opened the tournament with a 19-6 win over Lake Norman on Wednesday at Mathis Field. East dropped a 14-12 decision to North Piedmont on Thursday night at Mathis Field.
East plays Davidson County tonight at Faith Field at 6 p.m. in an elimination game.
n Other scores from the tournament on Wednesday: Eastern Randolph 13, Davidson County 3; Bunker Hill 6, Sawmills 0 (forfeit); North Piedmont 13, Sherrills Ford 9.
n Thursday scores: Davidson County 6, Sawmills 0 (Sawmills eliminated); Sherrills Ford 17, Lake Norman 1 (Lake Norman eliminated); Bunker Hill 16, Eastern Randolph 8.
Bunker Hill and North Piedmont play in the winners bracket game at 8 p.m. tonight at Faith Field, while Sherrills Ford and Eastern Randolph play the other elimination game on Friday at 7 p.m. at Mathis Field.
n East soccer East Rowan will be holding optional boys soccer workouts every Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the high school.
Tryouts start Aug. 1.
n Catawba swimmingCatawba swimmers Jaimie Horton, Leah Constan-Tatos, Mikael Karlsson, Yakir Malul, Zach Owen and Alex Walpole were named to the Bluegrass Mountain Conference all-academic team.
Student-athletes must have attained a 3.5 GPA and also competed in the 2011 BGMC Championships.
