SALISBURY — When high school graduation was over last week, local fans waved goodbye to to arguably the best senior class of athletes in county history.
This past year alone, the county brought home two titles in football and basketball, along with one in girls tennis, boys track and golf.
And several senior swimmers have made their mark with college futures.
The Rowan Aquatic Club is sending six of its swimmers to college to continue their careers:
• Carley Drye, the Rowan County swimmer of the year, is headed for Liberty.
• East Rowan’s Samatha Zerger is going to Mars Hill.
• Salisbury’s Andrew McCollister will stay close to home and swim for Catawba.
• Three RAC swimmers from Davidson County will also compete in college. Chase Frazzale of West Davidson will swim for Clemson while Taylor Hill and Vicky Miller are going to be Pfeiffer Falcons.
And you want training? Under the direction of RAC coach Ben Humphrey, the local swimmers work year-round, six days a week, averaging 15 to 20 hours per week.
