Salisbury’s Clark Alcorn shot a 74 to win the individual championship in the third annual Irish Creek High School Golf Invitational held on Tuesday. The event featured seven teams from Cabarrus County and six from Rowan.
Each team consisted of five players (the low three scores counted for the overall team score).
The overall team champion was Salisbury’s ‘A’ team with a score of 230. Alcorn edged teammate Roy Dixon, who shot a 75. Alex Austin shot 76, Eric Edwards 77, Alex Nianouris 78 and Alex Lee 85 for the Hornets.
James Lohr and Conner Lowman shot 79 and 81, respectively, for East, while West Rowan’s Jake Kennedy shot 83.
• East Rowan shot 154 and won an NPC match played in chilly weather at McCanless on Monday. Lowman (36), Lohr (39), Jared Hough (39) and Mason Preslar (40) led East.
Statesville, led by medalist Jack Archibald’s 35, finished second at 159.
Carson placed third at 175, with Andrew Purcell (36), Christian Shuping (45), Dalton Parrott (46) and Ryan Craft (46) leading the Cougars.
West Rowan and South Rowan shot 175s to tie for fourth. Kennedy (38), James DeCoster (40), Chris Hassard (48) and Hayden Gurley (49) led the Falcons, while Luke Rary (41), C.T. Welch (44), Evan Neas (44) and Josh Lowder (46) paced the Raiders.
North Iredell (183) and West Iredell (199) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
All-CPC
Davie’s Shannon Dillard, Nate Jones and Caleb Martin were named to the All-CPC boys basketball team. Dillard and Jones are juniors, while Martin is a freshman.
Reagan’s Howard West and Braeshaun Dozier were named CPC coach and player of the year, respectively. n Davie’s Laura Shelton and Amy Steller were named to the All-CPC girls basketball team.
Mount Tabor’s Millesa Calicott was named CPC Player of the Year.
Davie swimmers making All-CPC were Nathan Milleson, Blakely Gantt, Bailey Folmar, Erica Coffey and Palmer Benson.
Davie wrestler Michael Waters was named the CPC’s outstanding wrestler under 140 pounds.
Other War Eagles making the All-CPC team included Matt Cusack, Trevor Albarron, Alex Costner, Alex Gobble, Ryan Smith, Toby Lowe, Logan Cartner, Nathan Sheets, Cole Blankenship, Gerald Whitaker, Tony Donati and Trevon Faulkner.
All-NPC
West Rowan and South Rowan placed three players each on the all-NPC basketball team.
Keshun Sherrill, B.J. Sherrill and Jarvis Morgan represented West, while Johnathan Gaddy, Mark McDaniel and Josh Medlin were the Raiders who made the team.
Carson’s Nick Houston and Rik Heggins also made the squad.
Statesville’s Sonny Schofield won Coach of the Year. Schofield’s son, Nick, won player of the year honors.
• Carson’s girls had their most successful season in history and placed four on the All-NPC team — Chloe Monroe, Allison Blackwell, Tyesha Phillips and Kelly Dulkoski.
West Rowan placed Ayana Avery, Shay Steele and Nycieko Dixon on the squad. Nicole Barringer and Lauren Miller made the team from South Rowan, while Olivia Sabo and Karleigh Wike were selected from East Rowan.
North Iredell’s Bri Johnson was NPC Player of the Year and NI’s Tami Ramsey was NPC Coach of the Year. All five NI starters made the team.
• South Rowan’s Eli Freeman was named NPC Wrestler of the Year, while Bryan Tutterow of North Iredell was Coach of the Year.
West Rowan finished second in the league behind North Iredell and placed five on All-NPC — James Fairbanks, A.J. Speight, Daniel Taggert, Trey Shepherd and Steven Crandall. Carson’s Nathan Hill and Micah Honeycutt, East Rowan’s Mark Almeida and Kory Shaffer and South’s Jonathan ruiz made the squad.
Prep soccer
West Rowan’s girls soccer team defeated Mooresville 2-1 on Tuesday, as Allison Parker and Kayla Boley turned in outstanding defensive efforts. Anna Edwards scored on a chip shot at the 26:30 mark in the first half. Parker made it 2-0 with a header early in the second half.
Prep baseball
East Rowan got terrific pitching from hard-throwing Bradley Robbins and crafty Will Johnson and beat West Iredell 5-0 on the road for an NPC victory on Tuesday. Robbins fanned eight and walked none before being relieved by Johnson in the sixth.
Andy Austin had a pair of RBI doubles for the Mustangs. Nathan Fulbright scored a run with a sac fly, and Wesley LeRoy picked up an RBI when he was struck by a pitch with the bases loaded. Box is in Scoreboard.
East center fielder Will Sapp, injured last week, didn’t play, but is expected to return to the lineup soon.
• East Davidson (2-2) was beaten by Wheatmore 3-2. Tyler Lequire went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Prep tennis
Salisbury’s tennis team improved to 3-1 after a tough 5-4 win against Davie on Tuesday.
The Hornets led 4-2 after singles. Seth Gentry and Brock Overcash had third-set tiebreaker wins.
But Davie took No.1 and No. 3 doubles to tie the match. It came down to No. 2 doubles, where Salisbury’s Steven Page and Overcash won 8-6.
Prep track
East Rowan easily won a track meet at Mount Pleasant. The Mustangs (135 points) outdistanced Mount Pleasant (60), South Rowan (35) and West Stanly (34).
Finishing first for East were Jordan Hopper (discus), Cole Honeycutt (1600), Hakeem Gittens (triple jump), Ben Hancock (400), Dillon Arey (pole vault), Raykwon Torrence (long jump), Chase Brown (110 hurdles), Shawn Galloway (300 hurdles), Luke Wilkinson (200) and the 4×400 relay team on Hancock, Evan Hiatt, Madison Hedrick and Honeycutt.
The 4×800 meter relay team (Honeycutt, Deepan Patel, Eli Walton and Brad Oden) and the 4×200 relay unit (Tyler L’Hommedieu, Torrence, Gittens and Chris Patterson) also won.
Finishing first for South were Mark McDaniel in the 100 meters and the high jump, along with the 4×800 relay team. Eric Delgado was second in the 3200, and Caleb O’Neal was second in the 800.
College baseball
Catawba won 4-2 at No. 17 USC Aiken on Tuesday behind the pitching of freshman John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown). Tuttle held the Pacers to three hits and one earned run in seven innings.
John Neese knocked in two runs for the Indians, while Blake Houston (South Rowan) and Julio Zubillaga (Carson) knocked in one apiece. SAC Pitcher of the Week Nick Lomascolo earned a save.
Charlotte’s Justin Seager (NW Cabarrus) was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. Seager has opened his college career 6-for-15.
Zach Smith (East Rowan) had three hits, and Micah Jarrett (East) hit a towering homer for Pitt Community College in a recent romp against College of Albemarle.
Catawba Valley Community College’s Randy Shepherd (West Rowan) is 2-0 with eight strikeouts and no walks in nine innings of work.
CVCC started the season 14-0.
Trey Holmes (East) had three hits as Appalachian State swept a doubleheader from La Salle on Tuesday.
Billy Veal (North Rowan) hit a home run on Monday as Bryan swept a doubleheader from Kenyon.
College hoops
Mark Vanderslice (West Rowan) was named Region 10 Coach of the Year. He’s led Louisburg College (31-1) to the Sweet 16 to play for the national junior college title in Danville, Ill., on March 15-19.
College golf
Jordan Walor, who helped UNC Pembroke win the team title, won a playoff for medalist honors at the Richard Rendleman Invitational men’s golf tournament.
Walor defeated Carson-Newman’s Gavin Hay in the playoff as he made a par on the first extra hole.
The 17-team tournament concluded on Tuesday at Country Club of Salisbury. Catawba shot 305-294 — 599 and finished seventh, 18 shots back of UNC Pembroke
Evan Kilchenstein led Catawba with an eight-place finish. He shot rounds of 72 and 73 for a 145 score.
Hole-in-one
Don Ross had an ace at Rolling Hills Golf Club recently. His shot came on the 167-yard No. 10 hole.
Witnessing the feat were Dean Combs, Larry Sample, Gary Willoughby and Brent Ross.
7th-grade hoops
Southeast’s girls defeated Knox 35-20 on Monday. Taylor Martin had 14 points, Adison Collins scored 10, and Shanice Miller contributed six.
Knox’s boys rolled over Southeast 68-36.
Donnell Alexander led the Trojans with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Jalen Sanders had 13 points, 10 rebounds and six steals.
Deshawn Troutman had 12 points and five assists. Corban Usry had seven assists.
Leading scorers for the Patriots were Bryson Collins with 10 points and Tanner Christy with seven.

Presbyterian announced that it is elminating lacrosse as a varsity sport.
Wake Forest got a commitment from Concord First Assembly junior Codi Miller-McIntyre, who began his career at Northwest Cabarrus.
Pro baseball
Analyst and former Mets pitcher Ron Darling declared on Monday that Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) is “making the transition from a thrower to a pitcher.”
There’s serious speculation that Parnell will replace Francisco Rodriguez as the Mets’ closer as early as 2012.
