The annual Rowan County Juneteenth Celebration will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at Kelsey Scott Park.
It will be a free event. However, donations will be accepted.
The event will feature a car and motorcycle show, as well as basketball and softball tournaments.
There will be live auditions for talent and fashion shows sponsored in part by Noema Records and Entertainment. The auditions can win contestants a spot in the upcoming Mu-shion show, which is a crossover of fashion and musical arts.
Other interesting acts and attractions include the High Point House of Prayer Praise and Shout Band, Kujimani Creative Arts and DJ Glenn Ford from DJ Majesty Entertainment.
It has been tradition to select a Ms. Juneteenth. Last year’s winner, Sharaye Wood, should be on hand to meet the newest winning woman.
The Juneteenth proceedings have a new director this year, Sherry Hawthorne. Having worked on the event committee for the past four years, she is dedicated to bringing new events to involve the community.
She has helped organize the Martin Luther King parade and the yearly back-to-school event.
Previous Juneteenth events have been successes, featuring food, games and music. This year’s festivities should have more focus on Gospel than before.
Sponsors for this year’s event include Food Lion, Wal-Mart, Cheerwine, Enterprise and First Legacy Community Credit Union.
