NAGS HEAD (AP) ó Gov. Beverly Perdue will speak at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new fishing pier on the North Carolina Outer Banks.
Jennette’s Pier lost 540 feet to Hurricane Isabel in 2003 and the owners said they couldn’t rebuild. The North Carolina Aquarium Society owns and operates the pier and has raised millions of dollars to help fund renovation. The new pier will be called the North Carolina Aquarium Pier.
Perdue will speak Friday morning at the pier construction groundbreaking. Last month she signed the bill that authorized the work.
The society has raised $14 million for the project, which will create more than 500 jobs at the site and 1,250 off-site positions.
