Sports briefs: Intimidators roll; Seager signs

The Kannapolis Intimidators won 8-3 at Charleston, S.C., on Friday.
Jared Mitchell returned from the DL to make his professional debut and looked strong, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. The 23rd overall pick out of LSU also made a nice running catch in center field in the eighth inning.
Josh Phegley, another first-round draft choice, slugged his second homer. Drew Garcia also homered off Charleston starter Andrew Brackman (1-10), the former N.C. State baseball/basketball standout.
Stephen Sauer (6-3) earned the victory, firing six innings.
n Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus, UNC) has finally signed with Seattle and is expected to report to the Clinton LumberKings. His pro debut could come tonight.
n Tim Smith (Catawba) had an excellent relief outing for Savannah in a 6-1 SAL loss against Hickory on Friday.
Smith (Catawba) pitched 31/3 scoreless innings while allowing three hits. Smith’s ERA dropped to 1.93.
n North football camp
North Rowan will hold its Cavalier Youth Football Camp from July 27-30.
The camp is open to players in grades 2-8. Camp runs from 5:30-8 nightly. The cost is $25. Parents may register participants on Monday, July 27.
This is a non-contact camp intended to be both fun and instructional, with emphasis on safety, sportsmanship and techniques. Contact North Rowan coach Tasker Fleming at 704-213-9874.
The first day of football practice at North Rowan High is Saturday, Aug. 1. Practice begins 8:30.
All athletes in grades 9-12 are reminded to have a completed physical on file. Sign in at the field house. Players should bring cleats, T-shirts and shorts.

n College football
Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards is the lone Football Championship Subdivision (FCS ó formerly Division I-AA) representative among the 21 players nominated for the 2009 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
The Unitas Golden Arm Award is presented annually to college football’s top senior quarterback.
Edwards racked up 2,902 passing yards, 941 rushing yards and a SoCon-record 41 touchdowns for (30 passing, 11 rushing) as a junior. He ranked second nationally with a 170.19 pass-efficiency rating, seventh with 3,843 yards of total offense and 58th in rushing. He threw only two interceptions in 224 regular-season pass attempts, with a school-record string of 176 passes without an interception.
n Tennis lessons
The Salisbury Parks and Recreation will hold tennis lessons for ages 6-10 at the Salisbury Civic Center.
Lessons run each Wednesday from 6-7 p.m. for four weeks, starting July 22.
Cost is $9 per lesson or $30 for all four weeks. The camp is conducted by Catawba coach Jeff Childress.

n Little League sign-ups
Rowan Little League will take sign-ups July 20- Aug. 16 at Godley’s Garden Center for fall baseball and softball.
Online registrations are accepted at http://www.rowanlittleague.com.
Fall ball is for ages 5-14. Cost is $30. League age is age on April 30, 2010. Games begin after Labor Day. Rowan Little League boundaries include players living north of Kannapolis and west of I-85.

n Local golf
Defending champion Ronnie Eidson, medalist Keith Dorsett and qualifying runner-up Roy Dixon were among the winners in match play in the Horace Billings Rowan Amateur on Friday at Corbin Hills.

n Floridian Clint Jensen won the eGolf Professional Tour’s fifth annual Southern Open, contested at The Club at Irish Creek and Warrior.
He won $30,000 by defeating Jeremy Pope and Christo Greyling in a playoff.
